I got this one used off a BallReviews member, because I've always liked the X-Factor series and never got the chance to try a Deuce.
The ball came very roughly sanded, which I didn't want. So we took the surface up to 1000 Abralon and then polished it heavily.
The ball has about a 3 inch pin. In its current drilling, the pin is above the ring about an inch and a half, at about 1 o'clock to the ring finger. The CG is under the ring about an inch and a half.
My first impression of this ball is that it's going to be super on a house shot. My first game was 255 and I was able to play in, out, down and in, wherever. The ball makes a very strong move to the pocket when it hits dry, but it doesn't overreact or get wild. With the surface in the condition it's now in, the ball makes a power arc move in the back. Carry is superb -- this might be an old ball, but the core in this ball is not very different from the Paradigm core.
My next test usage was on a PBA Regional shot league, pattern 3. I played over third arrow, out to about 10 for the first couple of games. At the start of the third game, the shot broke down a little and I was able to go out to 5 or 6, and turn the speed up a little.
During the first two games, the ball gave me a very rolly, even reaction. Not a lot of snap until it was right in front of the pin deck. During the third game, however, I was able to open up a little more and have a little fun with it.
I got the chance to test this ball side-by-side with a Depth Charge and a Dark Thunder on both conditions listed above. On the house shot, the Deuce really outshined the other two balls. The Depth Charge was having problems with the wet-dry line, while the Dark Thunder (sanded to 600) just was too strong. On the PBA shot, though, the Depth Charge was stronger in the back end and more angular, while the Deuce was a smooth roller. The Dark Thunder was still a bit strong -- similar to the Depth Charge, just stronger all over -- as we were apparently on a low-volume version of Pattern 3.
In conclusion, the Deuce is more than enough ball for any house shot, and is still viable on tougher shots. Like most Storm balls, the cover is infinitely versatile. The roll is very predictable, and the core, which was way ahead of its time when it was made, gives you above-average carry. These balls pop up on eBay and BallReviews from time to time, and it would probably be a good investment.
