X-Factor Vertigo
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
If you need a ball for oily lanes, the Vertigo™ is the one! STORM™ has incorporated a newly-formulated SFA™ coverstock, scuffed to an 800-grit matte finish, which maintains high-performance standards over time. On a heavily oiled pattern with moderate carry-down, the Vertigo™ revs up strong in the mid-lane and makes a dramatic turn at the break point. Don’t take it from us, experience it for yourself. You’ll be surprised with the backend reaction this ball produces despite the dull surface. Or polish the Vertigo™ up to 1500-grit to increase the backend “snap”! The pin action of the newly designed asymmetrical RAD3 weight block combined with the equally new SFA™ coverstock, will make your head spin!

I just joined this site today so I could leave this review. The Vertigo is no joke. I picked the ball up last night and threw a game with it on a lane that seniors bowled on earlier in the day. So it was not fresh oil. I threw a few warm up shots first, 4 of the 5 were strikes. Then I turned the scorer on........

X,7-(s),X,X,X,X,X,X,X,X9/ = 253

That was right out of the box. The second frame I threw the ball to slow, it came high and left some uglies. The second ball in the 10th frame it left a solid 9 pin.

I have it drilled with the pin above the ring finger. The ball gets down the lane really well and when it turns it hits hard. Great pin action with it as well. I am looking forward to the first night of league with this on friday night.

Old school bowler coming back to the game after a 10 year break.  Researched this ball thoroughly and found it is the hookingest ball on the market.  I throw about 13 MPH with a medium rev rate, so I was looking for something that will keep up with my throw style.  Ball is drilled using Storm's Layout #1, sharp mid lane hook.

Rolled it during a practice session on wood with medium oil and this baby took off like a light about 40 feet down alley.  Stood on the 15 and threw for the 5 and she hit the pocket so hard the tech in the back had to come out front to see who was making all of the racket.  Threw it during league and rolled a decent 598.  Last week rolled a 689.  This is on wood mind you, synthetic is whole different story.  Played a synthetic house and my urethane ball did more hooking on the back end than the vertigo, but when she hit the pocket, there was no doubt.

The one thing I love about this ball is the pin action.  It is rare that I leave a standing 10 pin and the pins move so much there is no room for anything to be standing.  It is very forgiving on misplayed shots about 2-3 boards as the pin carry is generous.

Hope this helps you in finding a ball that suits your style.  Good luck and good bowling.

Got this Vertigo about 3 days ago along with the Team Storm Clear Polyester Ball for spares.  The Vertigo is an EXCELLENT ball for those heavy oil and synthetic lanes. Great reaction.  On the dry lanes however, it will burn up unless you feel like polishing it.  If you need a very reactive heavy oil ball, this is the ball to choose, with the Ace behind it. 10 for 10. GO STORM

My vertigo i drilled pin 5 inch from my pap and have the rad swung an inch right of my thumb!! I had to take the coverstock and sand it up to 1000 grit wet sand and threw it last night it was very clean in the heads and had a smooth but strong arcing motion to the pocket!! The stock finish on the ball was to over under for me but now it is smooth and very predictable!! I would give it a 9 out of a 10
--------------------
I keep trying!!! I know there is a 300 in me some day as long as I can stay away from the darn 9 pin!!!

I think I found THE non-particle heavy oil ball: the Storm X-Factor Vertigo. Many thanks to Jeff Lizzi at Star Lanes for drilling this ball up and offering a few suggestions to help me with my heavy oil/Sport game.

My ball is drilled with the pin under ring finger 4 1/2" from the PAP, CG below the midline with a large X-hole 5 1/4" from the grip center through the CG on the VAL (the top weight was 3.1 ounces). I placed the RAD between strong and the VAL. The CG is off the line running from the pin to the RAD, so it (the CG) is within a couple inches of the VAL. This setup helps me on heavy, long oil patterns... a tournament ball, really!

One side note, I decided NOT to use finger grips for fear of overturning the ball, and I wanted to get out of the ball cleaner upon release.

I tested the Vertigo on both house and Sport patterns, and I was amazed at how the ball snapped with a dull, sanded cover! I liked the recovery and area that I could play on the oilier lanes; usually I need to play straight up the boards. I had five to eight boards of area on the Sport pattern... and I had much more than that on the normal house condition.

Overall, the Vertigo will not see much use on the league shot, but it will help on the longer, oilier patterns usually found in tournament competition...

Let me just say this is the first Storm ball I have ever rolled, and Wow! I am a down and in bowler, who often struggles with longer heavier oil. The ball is drilled pin under ring finger with VAL by thumb. I roll the ball about 18mph with low/med revs. This is the first ball Ive ever had in years that I feel you can really open up the lane with. Its the most forgiving ball Ive ever thrown, and gets back to the hole on shots that are thrown too far right. Anyone looking for crazy area, right and left look to the Vertigo. Thanks to Brian LeClair, of LeClairs Pro Shop for the great drill. 10out of 10!

I purchased this ball at the ABC convention, in Baton Rouge. This 15lbs, ball came with a 3" pin, and an unknown top weight! Drilled at a 10:30 rev leverage position. I tried this ball at the ABC with no success. In the 800 grit coverstock, The rev leverage position made the ball stand up at 35'. So after I came home to really see what this ball could do. I bowl on 40-42 oil lanes and about a medium conditions. For this ball to be a close 2nd to extreme, this ball was a much better fit for my style of game . Any stroker that is looking for a medium-medium heavy ball, This storm ball is the choice! I am looking forward to going to the lanes now!

X-Factor Vertigo
PAP 4 5/8 and 1/8 up
Starting Weight:  15lbs 3oz  2.75oz top  3.25" pin
Drill Pattern: 4.5 x 3, RAD 1" past VAL, weight hole on PAP 1" bit 2.5" deep

I drilled this ball because I needed to fill in the gap for HEAVY oil equipment.  I was gonna put the pin above my ring, but decided to put the pin under my ring finger so that the ball would start up earlier and give me a better read in the midlane and I put the VAL 1" past my PAP to give the ball a really smooth arc.  This ball hits like a mack truck in the pocket.

The pattern I tried this on was oiled to 37 feet and buffed to 42 with the outside 10 boards dry.  I had my feet on 29 out to 21 at the arrows and 13 at my break.  The ball first started to roll early so I thought that it was going to die out, but as soon as the ball hit the backends it made a strong arc to the pocket.  I was able to use this line for about a game and a half and then I had to put it back in the bag, due to carry down.
Next shot was the house shot, oiled 35 and buffed to 40 feet.  I had my feet on 39 aimed at 27 at the arrows with a break point of 15.  With the shot I was able to play to use this ball for about half a game including practice, due to the lack of oil used for the house shot.

Likes:  This ball did exactly what I wanted it to do and it smells amazing.  Hits like a truck.

Dislikes:  this ball is only good for about 2 games in my area, loses total reaction due to lack of oil.  Is advertised to be able to handle carry down but tends to staighten up in the carry down.

i just got the vertigo. i drilled it out 4" pin with the cg kicked out an inch and a half. with a balance hole 1" from the CG. out of the box this ball reacted like no other i have seen. i am a cranker that throws about 17mph. i was throwing 27 out to 6 and that thing snapped at 46 ft. the balls carry keeps the pins low which causes pin carry to be outstanding. i bowl in a sport shot league and its almost too much ball for the conditions. i would recommend this ball to anyone who likes a really aggessive ball. out of 10 i would have to rate it at an 8.

another great ball by storm!

This ball is wicked!  Slides considerably more than I thought it would considering it's an 800 grit finish.  Has a very hard snap into the pocket, no matter where you put it on the lane!  Even right in the middle of the lane where there's a good amount of oil and this ball doesn't care!  I'm a tweener with average speed, normally play a down and in shot but with this ball I can play inside angles like never before.  The only type of bowler I've ever seen play very deep angles are crankers, and I was able to do that with this ball.  I was on a medium oil condition and the ball was very strong, this ball is going to be great for carrydown!  Way to go storm!

This ball is awsome, I can use it on medium-Heavy condtions.  I have had this ball for 2 months and its lost a little of its out of box condtion reactive.  I shot my high game with this ball a 289 for a 706 series!

Check my profile for bowler info. Basic power player

2" pin
41/2 X 31/2

Well all I can say about this ball is it is the real deal. It does everything its suppose to do....clear the heads and really hit the backend. For me this ball had to much entry angle. I have nothing but trouble with leaving 9 pins and the occasional 4 pin. Not to mention for me this thing was very sensitive to the slightest change in hand positions or speed. Keep in mind I have a lot of revs and turn, so I normally get equipment to more some what more angular than the guy on the pair next to you. This is really the first time I've said words "this ball is too much for me" and meant it. I think if your one of those guys who are having problems getting a ball to finish this will be perfect. I've sanded the cover to 600 which helps tone the backend for me, but I have to cover too many boards to hold it. Great ball though, just not for me.

Purchased a second Vertigo: polished and drilled with the pin over bridge 5 1/2" from PAP, CG 3" from grip center with an X-hole on the midline and the VAL (all thanks to the USBC and their recent decisions concerning CGs and X-holes). The RAD was placed in the strong position in order to take full advantage of the 0.020 mass bias differential. Again, no finger grips were employed except for a thumb slug.

I want to send a special thanks to Jim Kiser from Aubrey, Texas for selling me this ball, and also to Mike Corum at Empire Pro Shop inside Southwyck Lanes in Toledo, Ohio for drilling me this ball.

On that note, we move on to the review...

I needed something that could handle midlane carrydown, yet still get through the heads with a little bit of length. Tried this ball on a summer challenge league at Southwyck Lanes. Playing up the boards on the fifty-foot PBA Tournament of Champions oil pattern, the Vertigo did well, although the new Trifecta would be better suited for such a condition. I still managed to roll a 585 series (177-202-206).

On the house pattern, this second Vertigo is a killer. Rolled 256 out of the box in practice at Southwyck, and I managed a solid 660 series in the heat and carrydown of summer league play at Harbor Freeway Lanes in Port Clinton, Ohio. A great performer on heavier-than-normal lane conditions, a great addition to the arsenal, and a great ball that will take the competition by storm (no pun intended!).

Lane Conditions: Heavy Oil
Typical Conditions: House Shot
Type of Lane: All Wood
What part of the lane did you play? Second Arrow
Did the ball track out? Fast
Weight of bowling ball: 15
Surface of bowling ball: Factory/Box
What grit was the surface of the ball? 800
Likes: Not much!
Dislikes: Lack of hit.

I bowl on a medium oil house shot, with oil to 42 feet.  While I can get the ball to the pocket from just about any angle, it just will not carry.  I belive that the shot I am bowling on just does not have enough oil to support a ball this aggressive.

I polished the ball to 1500 and the back end improved but the carry did not.  I now have a Storm Paradigm that makes the Vertigo look like a wimp.

My plan is to dull the vertigo to 600 and use it if I run into heavy oil at a tournament.
