For a house shot, a good bowler could get by with any type ball and average 200 plus. I have seen a couple of guys that can pick up a house ball and shoot 220, that average 230-240 in our league. One of the guys set the state record for league average, and it was on the toughest shot in the city. He played with what he had, mostly a complete nv and a bunch of older balls.
For us wannabees, we generally do more harm than good by purchasing and trying to play all of the newest releases, most of which are too strong for the average house shot. I have a Virtual Gravity and Rogue Cell, both at OOB, and I have yet to find a place to use them in our league. Last night I tried the VG the first game, and shot a depressing 171, playing inside and outside, leaving seven pins (2), one eight pin, 2 tens and a split. Pulled out the HyRoad and shot decent for me the second and third, 190s, but still not good, because I was so far off from fighting with the VG the first game.
Norm Duke played with the HyRoad about as much as anything else I saw him throw last year, and you know he could have thrown anything he wanted to. The Frankly, I think he should have thrown it more. The stronger covers really need oil to shine.
So I would answer your question, yes, it is true, you don't need the high end balls to play THS.
