Virtual Gravity vs. Dimension
« on: June 09, 2009, 05:20:58 AM »
Is there much difference between the vg and the dimension besides the dimension will have a more smooth arch? I am looking for a good heavy oil ball for when I switch to 15lbs and I know that the vg dies fairly quick so was thinking about a dimension instead. so, how do these two compare as far as over all hook goes?

They have the same coverstock with the R2X, so they wil "die" at roughly the same rate.  As far as overall hook, the Virtual is a bit stronger than the dimension because it has a stronger move on the backend.

I personally would not get too wrapped up looking for the "maximum hooking ball".  People tend not to run into a true heavy oil condition on a nightly basis and often times it is about reaction shape more than it is about overall hook.  Consider the Shark pattern, which is the heaviest and longest of the usual PBA patterns.  Often times people play this pattern with mid-line stuff like a hy-road or a grand illusion rather than the true "oilers".  Here, its about getting something to respond with control on the backend rather than revving in the oil up front.

The ball isn't going to die! You have to utilize a maintence program to continue to get use out of the ball

That is a good point, do you think it would be smarter to get like two hyroads and get one with a strong drilling and take it to 1000 grit and use it for the heavy oil and get the other one drilled weaker and leave at oob for medium oil?

So your sayin that no one else on this webpage has had a maintenance program for this ball? Because I have read over 20 reviews of this ball dying. I have one right now and it has died, I have tried everything (resurfaces, hot water baths, rejeuvanating it) and not a single thing has worked. I start a good 10-15 boards right of where I used to start with this ball during the first 20 games when I had it.

You could go with multiple hyroads at different surfaces and handle most stuff out there.  If you liked the virtual before it died, you could try an oiler with a different coverstock such as the T-Road Solid which has the R2S solid (a bit weaker but with a pin down drill it should be pretty strong) or the Cell from roto which has the Cytoplasmic reactive coverstock (between the Virtual and the Dimension as far as backend and overall hook, in my opinion).

Another option, if you like the backend of the Virtual that you had, would be the Rogue Cell or perhaps the new Virtual Energy.  Each of these should have alot of backend, though neither will be as strong as a Virtual oob.

Nor cal bowler, you tell me what I should do to get this ball back to its oob reaction, and I will try it and see if it works.

i have both and each has alot of games on them, with regular cleaning and abralon they work just fine. when i clean them i use a abralon with reacta clean and its the same reaction everytime i bowl. if you bowl on a shorter heavy oil pattern the dimension is what you want, a longer heavy pattern the virtual is what you want as it is more angular at the back of the pattern than the dimension. if i may suggest a layout for both virtual and dimension, go with a duel angle 60 degree it starts them up earlier./ i think the virtual because its 4k out of the box wants to go longer by nature change the cover to 2k and you got a beast..hope that helps

i know this isnt the thread, but,i have a vg and from the start it was not what i hoped for, however,i had taken it down to 1000 after i had soaked it and it really made no difference. What i did after that was ,I know its not recommended, but i hit it with a worn green scratch pad and at least it did get a readable hook shape again. Its still no 40 board ball ,but at 500 or so at least when nothing else will move i can pick it up and get to the pocket, and for me that was a vast improvement .I started to see loss in reaction after the 1st 10 games.I rarely ever use it now ,but its there just in case
