A compliment to the Dark Thunder Pearl

Hello,

I am looking for a ball for my g/f to compliment her current ball.  As mentioned its the Dark Thunder Pearl.  She has med/low speed and med/low revs.  We had luck with the Roto-grip RSX a few years ago.

After jumping between a few brands, she likes what Storm has to offer.  There are some specifics though, she seems to have the best results with symmetric cored pearl balls.  

She is looking for a ball that can be used opening shift.  The Dark Thunder seems to work well when the shot has broken down, allowing her to move in and let the ball come back for her.

Right now I am thinking Spitfire...but I am not sure.

Secret or special agent or shift i have all of the one's mentioned i am real liking the look out of the Secret Agent already.

In Rotogrip the Horizon Solid would get the job done very nicelt also, being that we all do not see her bowl, i would not ask for ball layouts that is your pro's job.

thanks for the input, the only problem with those being is that the balls you suggested are solids.  We haven't had much luck with solids.  They are too aggressive for her since she has a slower ball speed.  They tend to grab too early and are difficult to control.

We tried the shift (first assy. ball) and shes having trouble with the ball responding off the dry.  That's why we are looking for a pearl ball with a more aggressive cover we can use as an opener.

I appreciate the concern about the ball layout-we already have a layout for her that has been working well.  We just need a ball to match up.

Just curious: You say you had "some luck" with the RSX.  Can you elaborate a little on that?  Wasn't the RSX a solid?  What happened to that?

I kind of know what you mean on the solid thing.  My girlfriend has the same issue.  The only time she was able to really use original Dark Thunder (polished) really well is when there was a ton of oil on the lane.  She has been doing a lot better lately with a length drilled T-Road Pearl.

Now keep in mind that I really don't know what I am talking about (maybe someone can correct me) but I wonder...  You have a DT Pearl.  How is that one drilled?  Here are my random thoughts:

Maybe a Sure Fire?  Maybe Pyro if you can find one?  I would say the Agent but with slow speed I wonder if that would work...  I bet the layout is going to be really key with whatever you choose.

As far as pearls go, the Spit Fire has a nice bit of mid-lane read and strong back end.  The carry is great as well.  It's fairly controllable too--I've been able to use it a few times in my PBA Experience league when there's some friction to work with.  And even though it's a solid reactive, I see where mrbowlingnut is coming from.  The Special Agent is a very controllable, versatile ball (it's my go-to ball in my PBA Experience league for a reason!).  Drill it for length but a little control and play with the surface.  Depending on what oil you're facing, the box finish may work, but it responds well to all kinds of surface changes.  And it isn't a very jumpy ball--it's pretty consistent and won't bite you too bad on a regular house shot I've found.

You mentioned she's got a slower ball speed that makes choices more difficult--it may not be a bad idea to have her work with a coach on her form to see if her ball speed can be picked up some through changes in her approach, etc.  She doesn't need to rocket the ball down the lane, of course.  However, having the ability to roll the ball a little slower or a little faster depending on the lane conditions would be a great help.

Secret Agent is a hybrid and does have built length and backend, Shift is particle pearl and is similar to the Secret Agent but in my case is less ball in total hook.

I did catch what you are saying since my wife throw's 13 lber's and on the slower side, Special Agent would be alot of ball for most slow rollers.

Have you tried taking the shine off the Shift to get it to react a bit more off the dry?

Took it down to 1000 and then repolished with less glossy surface better but still does not hook as much as the new Secret agent at 4k no polish out of the box.

I also got the new T-road solid i had to hit the ball with a 2k pad a few times by hand to get any length out of the ball. Hooks in your back swing oob, i have hardly any tilt and the core and cover will poop out if i have too much surface.


Lots of polish is my enemy i have to use 2k and 4k pads to get more length in most cases, i really do not want the Shift in the oil handling position so that is way it is still polished.

Fluff E Bunnie-My apologies, I meant the RS-1. We were looking at the RSX originally a while back...but chose the RS-1.  In terms of "some luck".  The ability to clear the heads, retain energy, and come back from an inside line without burning up / rolling out and still carry is what I refer to.  We have only purchased 2 balls in that time: The radical inferno and the shift (Not including the dark thunder of course).  Neither had the same reaction we were looking for despite the same layout and some different ones, and surface adjustments etc.

I actually was considering the T-Road Pearl as well.  In terms of layouts...she likes a 4 1/2 in pin to PAP (above ring finter).  CG is swung out about 2inches with a weight hole 1 inch below or on her PAP.

Dan Belcher-She is working with a coach.  We have a certified coach on our regular league, and our proshop guy includes a free lesson when a ball is drilled.  So we are working on it, but they both agree she has a great release, just in terms of how everyone else is throwing it, she is slower.  Shes around 12-14, most of the "guys" throw it around 16-18.

Everyone else:  In terms of modifying the Shift cover.  We haven't gotten that far yet.  It works well down and in, but she can't really open up the lanes or "arc" the ball.  We've been working at it for a while now, she's had it since it's release and still isn't happy.  So we are still looking for something that won't overlap with the Dark Thunder.

But at least I have another option in the T-Road Pearl.

The only thing about the T-Road Pearl is that you already have a Dark Thunder Pearl.  I wonder how similar those are.  Maybe have to set them up differently?

That's what I was thinking which is why I said original Agent because at least it is a pearl but with that core I am not sure if that is the best idea.  

There is also the Thunderstruck Solid (shiny)...  Maybe a controlled drilling on that?

I don't know, with that speed I am not sure you would want to go up to the really high performance stuff.  Did I read correctly that she also has a Shift?  Is it set up the same as the DT Pearl?

Fluff E Bunnie- Regarding the T-Road.  Yah...I am having trouble finding what ball won't overlap the DT.  I will have to talk to our pro shop guy to see if we should change to a different layout, since we already have one that works for her.

She does have a Shift, but we changed the layout to "experiment" since it was her first assymetrical.  The ball works great playing straight.  Problem being that the area that the ball works best is pretty much where everyone in league plays so it becomes difficult to control very quickly.  

Normally, she likes to swing the ball a little.  With her slower ball speed, and the strong backend motion of her DT, she is able to play in and still carry when the ball comes back.  

Her Shift tends to roll out especially when there's carry down present.  Her DT comes screaming back from anywhere.

The spit fire is a fair option as would the fired up or the domination, which I am fast falling in love with.  I personally do not throw the ball anything like your girlfriend, but I figure that anything that is pearl should work well.  The Shift having some particle was probably the problem.  

You may also want to opt for a mild solid such as the purple thunderstruck.  She should be able to go straighter with less swicng with this piece.  Another intriguing option is the t-road pearl.  The t-road pearl will have no trouble getting down lane and it should be able to recover quite nicely on the backend.

I can't seem to find ball specs for the DTpearl.  Does anyone have "general" comparisions between the DTpearl and the T-Road Pearl / Spit Fire.  I may look into the Fired Up...but to my understanding that ball probably won't fill the void needed for a first ball out of the bag type of role.

Yeah I don't know about the Fired Up...  I would really talk to the pro shop about this one and really explain every piece you have, show them how it is drilled and explain the problems.

thanks for the link.  This will definitely help.

Normally, I talk to him after I have several balls lined up.  I don't like to walk in and totally clueless.  

I try and learn a little bit about the equipment I am using rather than have someone do it all for me.  

Makes his job easier and me a little more educated.  But the link provided is a great start.  Much thanks!
