Virtual Gravity /Hyroad/Cell Review
« on: June 22, 2009, 01:09:50 PM »
I waited several months to purchase the Virtual Gravity and HyRoad because I was having good luck with my Gravity Shift and Cell. Bowling on our house shot with oout of bounds at 5, my Cell at 2000 abralon would not turn the corner. It more less made an arc, and I could not carry without turning my shoulders toward the pocket and making perfect shots. After struggling with the Cell the first game and shooting a 165, I pulled out my VG. I then shot 243,234,240,235,170,163,155 before putting the VG back in the bag. I pulled out my HyRoad 2000 polished with Beans Sauce, and shot 194 my last game.

First, the VG turned the corner harder than the cell and carried just as well if not better.

Second, once we pushed the oil from the heads and I needed to move inside, I lost carry with the VG. Ringing tens or weak tens. The ball was burning up and I could not find the right line once the heads were fried. Should have put the ball down earlier.

Once the heads transitioned, my brother won the last three games using his Cell OOB, shooting 267,258,224. The Cell looked good once there was a defined breakpoint, and oil in the mids, where the VG needed head oil to shine. He moved outside, played straight up 3-5 coming up the back of the ball and the Cell crushed the pocket.

My VG is drilled 5x4 (No. 1 drilling I believe) with the pin above the ring finger and left at OOB. My HyRoad is drilled pin under with the cg on my track (best I remember), and is at 2000 abralon polished to a nice shine with Bean's sauce. Both balls cover about the same number of boards, but the HyRoad shines when the heads are dry and the VG is losing too much energy getting down lane. I have my GS under the HyRoad at 4000 abralon polished. All and all, a pretty good 1-2-3 punch.

I shot my highest series with a Gravity Shift, 727. The VG shows much more potential. I just have to learn how to put it in the bag. This is the second time out where I have shot high games the first four or five games and then seem to lose carry as the heads dried up, so I am convinced that it needs head oil to perform.

The VG is a must by in my book. The HyRoad is o.k. but I wish I had  drilled it pin up, the same as my VG.

I wonder if the situation with the Cell and the Vg wasn't such that there was not enough oil in the mids/heads for the Cell, a very early rolling ball, even at 2000 Abralon, more so than the VG at 4000 Abralon. That could easily have caused the condition/results that you saw.

The Cell's core is a very special one, with extreme continuation based of very even flare rings and many of them. Yet it still needs, in general, more oil than an equivalent VG, so far as I have seen.

The VG is very like the old Danger Zone: great in the hands of many lower rev bowlers, less so in the hands of people with more revs. Also good for people with higher ball speeds as that allows some control over the backend.

The mass bias of the Cell is used for overall hook and continuation, where the VG's MB strength is used mostly in its backend. An interesting situation vis-a-vis the main utility of both balls.

Just some thoughts.

May be that you are correct. I have had the same typer of experience twice in the last week with my  VG. Start off strong on fresh shot, as lanes break down, move inside, lose carry, have to go to polished ball--Hyroad 200 polished or GS, 4000 polished.

My ball speed has been 14.4 to 15 quibica, and i put  decent revs on the ball with a clean smooth release.

For me, the Cell works on tough shots where there is oil in the heads and mid lane and I need a smooth reaction, as opposed to the hard turn off the spot. VG or HyRoad are the ticket for THS, where I have some room and angle plus speed equals carry.

At the time I "played" with a Cell, I had hardly enough oil to make it work properly, until I tried it at 4000 Abralon. Then it made a very VG-like move in the backend, but at that time, my release also contributed to the backend. Nowadays, it slightly more even and I can put less revs on it. The Cell is still a more even reacting ball than a VG. The Rogue Cell, when finished to a true 4000 grit Abralon,  make be more comparable to a VG.

I agree that the Cell is a smoother reacting ball. For me, the Cell is condition specific and a lifesaver on tougher shots with good oil, for lack of a better term.

The Cell Pearl is more angular, but for some reason, I just did not match up with it so I sold it to a friend for 65 bucks and bought the VG. The VG is what I was looking for in the Cell Pearl.
