HyRoad Hook Set?
« on: April 17, 2009, 03:38:43 AM »
Is the primary reaction of this ball hook/set?  I was looking at picking one up for a PBA league because it's supposed to be a great control ball/lane reader.  A pretty good lefty threw one last night and it had the strongest hook/set reaction I've ever seen.  None of his other equipment does this.  It was a pretty standard layout on it, so I doubt that's a problem.  What kind of reaction are others getting from this ball?

mine is drilled pin over ring and from what my driller told me its drilled pretty much straight up and the ball is a monster.  Its at OOB and this ball impressed me more than my VG.  I wouldnt consider mine hook/set at all mines more of skid snap ball goes quite deep but retains a ton of energy.  Most impressive ball ive thrown since my first BWS.

The one I saw thrown in my league was very angular.  The guy has real good release & I would say rev dominant.  His is pin about an inch below bridge closer to the ring, cg on a 45 toward PAL.  If I didn't have so many balls already I'd consider one.  My Attitude Shift & regular Shift are my ole standbys.

No, mine is pin under and I have had mine for 2 months.  Most consistent ball I have.  No hook set for me.

Not that I am aware of, not at all. I wonder where you got that idea from?

It is not a control ball either, IN GENERAL, unless you "force" it to be that via either a drilling and a surface adjutsment or your release makes balls such.

These are certainly some unusual ideas you have concerning the Hy-Road.

Care to explain?

99% of what I see with it is virtually a flip or strong backend with tons of continuation, On Average. I never yet seen any hook and set with it.

I'd suggest it was either his drilling in combination with the oil pattern (possibly short oil) which can provoke that reaction. Since none of his equipment does this, I'd suggest it was the drilling and/or surface preparation in combo with the oil pattern.

Like I said, the only time I saw it in person, the guy throwing it had a hook/set reaction and he doesn't get it with his other equipment.  It revved up hard in the mid lane, hooked, then rapidly hooked out.

So many people/reviews on this site seem to imply that it works great on a multitude of conditions, that I thought it would make a good bench mark ball.  Control wasn't necessarily the word I was looking for.  Would you consider it a bench mark type ball?  If not, what are the HyRoad's strengths?  What would be a good medium oil bench mark ball?

Teammate of Charlest's and mine has one...it is damn flippy, nearly uncontrollable.

He has a medium track headed towards the low side, tweener style with slower speed.

There's nothing hook set about his Hyroad or the others seen in our area.  To borrow a metaphor from a buddy of mine this ball is all about violence on the back end.

From what I see it is a good medium oil ball can be used on a little more volume for him but he needs longer oils to tame the back end.  I don't see it being very useful on a fresh shot it would be too jumpy.  Even some mild carrydown would tame the ball making it a little more even and useful.

Mine is hook/set but I'm sure it's because of the layout.  My pin is 2 3/4 to PAP.  It's a look I've never had before.  With this layout it's fairly condition specific, but it's very good when it works like on Viper.

Never used it before.  My ball driller wanted to give me something different and that's what I got.

mine is more like length flip.I think with a 1-1/2"pin to pap you might get that reaction but I would'nt bet on it.I have a hammer pain with that layout that almosts gives me that type of reaction.I did have a playmaker and still have a pinslasher that both give me that type of roll.the PS is drilled 4x5 pin above grip line and @ 2000 and hook/sets. the ball is very condition specific and won't carry well if forced a little inside but it's a fantastic ball for fresh flat med/heavy patterns.

With its stock surface and almost high RG on the 15 and 14 lb balls, the HR can be fairly flippy. Because of its strong-ish cover and because of its ease of adjustment, I think the best description of it is versatile with power.

If set up properly, with drilling and surface for the bowler's release, yes, it can be a very good benchmark, but not with its stock polished surface (unless the bowler has an end-over-end release.)

A_P_K mentioned our teammate. He has medium-high revs, lots of tilt and medium-low to medium speed. His has a strong backend on medium-light friction surface. I wouldn't quite say it was true flippy backend, maybe just short of that. A hair more than his Uprising and less than his polished Virtual Gravity with a long pin.

ahhhh...

Yes that drilling turns a skid flip monster usually into a roll, roll smooth mover!

That is why I find reviews sometimes funny when they try all these exotic drillings and then declare the ball....is!

That is a nice drilling on the left at times.....oh yes....the center where I used to use it!  Breaking that out....this week!
