Problems with my gravity shift
« on: September 05, 2008, 04:07:06 AM »
About me :
Speed around 15, above average rev rate, kinda somewheres between a tweener and cranker, PAP 4 1/4 x 3/4 up.

My ball:

    P
  O  O
     CG
    O
       KEY

My problem: This ball does nothing.  I put surface on it it rolls out.  I polish it, it goes straight as an arrow.  I cannot figure out what to do.  Any sugestions?

You need Charlest to come to your rescue! I would try taking to a lower grit and using a compound versus a polish.

When you say the ball does nothing, what exactly do you mean??
Does the ball just not cover enough boards?
Does the ball not flare? How many flare rings are you getting, and are they tight together, or spread far apart?
What kind of lane surface are you bowling on?
What is your Axis of rotation?

Have you spoken with your pro shop about the situation, and asked him to watch you bowl?

There are many factors to consider, to try and establish what the problem is. We need a little more info. to be able to give you good positive feedback, and help you be satisfied with your product.

FWIW tommygn is asking the questions I would.
We need to know exactly what is going on in more meaningful terms, before anyone can render appropriate help.

ALso did the driller measure the CG?
and weigh the ball for initial and ending weights?
what is your tilt?

Ball gets about 3 1/2 inches of flare with about 3/8" between them.  I have polishes, abraloned, and played with compunds.  Ball just seems to slide and not finish.  I bowl on AMF HPL heads and old wood backends.  I have had Deone watch me and he thinks its me.  I just don't know.  I do drill and i know it doesn't have excess top weight.  As far as my tilt, I'm not a very good judge of that, but i am a 3/4 roller, my track is just off my fingers/thumb by about 1/4".  I hope this is helpful.

It sounds like you may be using the wrong PAP positioning. In my experience, if your track is only 1/4 of an inch from both your fingers and thumb, you would be closer to a 5 1/4 or maybe a 5 1/2 by 0 or maybe only 1/8 up or down. If you are only getting 3 1/2 inches of track flare, with the rings being close to 3/8 wide, you probably aren't getting as many revs on the ball as you think. You may want to move your feet a little right, and your mark a little left (opposite if you are a lefty) so that you can "square up" your angles to find the pocket.

Also, your axis of rotation is pretty important on a ball like the Gravity. It uses a low RG strong asymmetric core, and you may find that your ball is rolling towards the pins too much. An example of this is Randy Pedersen, as compared to wanting more axis rotation, like PDW. This helps your change of direction once the ball comes out of the oil.

I wish the center I work at now had an armadillo.  I forgot i had a ball with the pin on my axis.  I am exactly 5" right and 3/8 up.  (sorry i was way off)  I have 45ish degrees of tilt. And I am a rev dominate player.

If you are rev-dominant, with those axis coordinates and that layout, you should be getting more flare than what you are reporting.
Have you tried the ball on different lane conditions?

Honestly the only condition this ball likes is the Cheatah patern.  I don't know what else to say.  I've been playing around with it all day and cannot get a better result.  I'll try to post a video.  Maybe then someone can see my flaw.

You're not the only one that is having that issue.  I've tried 6 different surfaces on mine and the ball just doesn't do anything except on dirt.  I really don't know what to do anymore.  It flares plenty but it's like the cover just won't grip the lane.  I've actually read here that quite a few people are having issues with the cover of this ball.

I'm going to a clinic Sunday hosted by Mr. Richter.  Hank Boomershine and Chris Sand will be there and I will make sure to bring mine with so they can observe the motion for themselves.  I'll report back with what they say.

i have no idea how you throw yours but i found that less is more with this ball. i mean less hand and effort in helping the ball generates much more pop on the back end. i changed my hand position so i am totally up the back of the ball and it gives a totally different dynamic to it and it never stops hooking on med conditions.

I have felt very similar pains as you Stormkid84.  I tried a ton of stuff, but the magic potion I found is Resurrection and Snake Oil.  The cover is rather hard in general, and I find it needs a bit of surface below the polish.  I've tried beans on it, and the secret sauce was waaaay too much.  I'd say try those products and see how it goes.

Good luck!

I noticed that Raven829 got his Gravity fixed at a seminar that he attended hosted by Hank Boomershine. You may want to get with Raven829 to see what they did to make his DUD into a STUD.

I drilled a Gravity Shift for my friend who has similar PAP (5" straight over) but I derilled it pin under his bridge instead of over because he wanted this one to be smooth and read the lane a little earlier than if you drilled it pin over.  Because of the durability and hardness of the shell, it does take a while to break in and it can't handle the heavier oil patterns. But on our standard house shot, this ball can cover some boards.  Now my friends a little more able to change hand positions, speed, etc and this ball allows him to go up the boards or cover half of them.  I found with the original Shift, a pin over drilling will make it go a lot longer and sometimes read the lane too late so you might be running into the same problem.  The Shifts are no where close to the backend reaction of a Paradigm and I thought they were.  They are more smoother rolling, more controlable balls from Storm because thats the way a lot of the companies are going and this ball is just that.  I think you have to find where this ball and your game are comfortable and work with it or get rid of it or save it for the 3rd game.

P.S.  You don't need an Armadillo to locate your PAP.  All you need is a layout pencil and a ball spinner.  I'm sure you know what I'm talking about but if not draw a line on your initial ball track and follow it all the way around the ball.  No go to the spinner and have it so that line is an equal distance from the cup of the spinner and that the line is as level as you can get it.  Now turn the spinner on slow and look directly over the top of the ball and mark the very top of the ball that is staying stationary.  This is your PAP.  Measure your coordinates from the center of your grip and you are done.
