Alpha Crux vs No Rules and pearl selection also
« on: May 09, 2017, 07:49:42 PM »
As much as I want the re-release of Marvel Pearl, I've got to fill the Nationals bag first...

I've watched everything I can and just not sure...

I need a high end solid, and a pearl with punch. What the tweeners thinks is too much flip to me as a low rev lefty is a gentle breeze and a good thing, I need some drive in the back. No Rules "looks" like that choice, but I love the way the alpha Crux hits. On the pearl side, the Crux pearl seems to outshine the No Rules pearl...
Thoughts and reasoning please?
Thanks in advance

I feel the better combo of those two shapes is the Alpha Crux and the No Rules Pearl.  The No Rules Pearl gives you a bit more angularity and provides a bigger gap between it and the Alpha Crux than the Crux Pearl and the Alpha Crux.  To me, the Crux Pearl was more rounded in shape.

That's interesting. In the videos I watched, it looked like Crux Pearl was more angular than NRP, but then, it's all about the drill... Thanks for the feedback.

I agree. All the Crux Pearls I saw were rollier and lazier. Kinda like a hook stop motion. The No Rules Pearl seems very good for throwing away from the pocket and coming back with authority. My buddy uses this combo (No Rules Pearl & Alpha Crux) very well.

I own both the Crux Pearl and also the No Rules Pearl. They are both quite strong but I believe I hit strikes more often with the Crux Pearl and use it far more often. I generally use the Crux Pearl on medium lane conditions to somewhat medium to dryer conditions. On very dry conditions, or oil totally spread out because the lane has been bowled on for many games since last oiling, or very short lane patterns (like 35 feet) the Pitch Blue (urethane) is my choice.

For heavy oil, longer patterns, heavier transitioning into heavy-to-medium oil, a strong reactive solid ball with a good asymmetrical core (esp. for those of us closer to being "strokers" or "tweeners") is a must. I have an Alpha Crux and it has been so far my favorite reactive solid ball, I also have an IQ Tour solid. I tried a use Fight as a ball-down option for reactive solid, and I didn't like it. I have not tried the Sure Lock, but everything I've read suggests it is close to the Alpha Crux but hooks a bit more. I got a good deal on a No Rules solid with a 6-6.5 inch pin and I will be taking that to my PSO tomorrow for drilling, setup, and installation of Vise IT. I also picked up (used) a second Crux Pearl that I will have drilled a bit stronger, and probably bit rougher surface, to use it before my other Crux Pearl.

In order of lane conditions I'm looking at this:

Alpha Crux/No Rules solid
Crux Pearl pin down/1000 abralon sanded
Code Black
Crux Pearl pin up 1500 out of box finish
Pitch Blue
spare ball

I got an Alpha Crux prior to nationals last year.  While it was a bit too much sideways off the end of the oil it was the only thing I had tat would hit for me.  However I really never not a condition where I got great carry in subsequent months.  I drilled a no rules pearl a couple of months ago and like it pretty well.  Based on my experience with the Alpha I would think the Alpha pearl would be way to angular on flatter patterns.

Just to throw another twist, I drilled a Phase II, and like it much better as a strong solid, especially on tougher patterns

Bob, it's funny that you mentioned the Phaze 2. I got one last month based on what I was hearing, despite my trepidation based on the original Phaze. Right now, my Phaze II is a massive disappointment. It's extremely long and extremely weak. Of course, I suspect that means it's just not seeing sufficient oil, so I have not given up on it and it will be in the bag at nationals.

Weird.  I drilled mine pin down under the ring finger.  Totally different look than my Alpha Crux, but nearly as strong.  My best look was on a Viper playing about 7 board.  It definitely need some head oil, but if I can get it to the mids it is very continuous.  Mine didn't work very well on a shark on 20 year old anvil lane where the heads are bad.   I just couldn't get it to push.
