Arsenal Assistance Please
« on: May 29, 2016, 10:04:16 AM »
Thanks all in advance!! Quick info before the question, ~16mph, guessing ~300 revs, style that prefers to play between boards 8-22.

Now to my Arsenal predicament. During fall I did great our team won the league but it was on a lighter side of medium shot with older wood lanes. Now here comes the summer league and first time since new lanes 😁. They run on the heavier side of medium and are new synthetic lanes and this center is my problem.

Current Arsenal:
-RG Haywire (currently 3000 grit but haven't figured this ball out yet. Drilled strong with pin slightly above and to the right of ring finger)

-Lane#1 Hybrid Dirty Bomb (Leverage drilled pin to the right of ring)

-Storm Hy-Road Pearl (Love it, killer on the wood lane house but glides too long and over/under at slicker house)

-Lane#1 Dirty Bomb (Pin Down just under ring finger).

Most glaring issue I have is I can't get the Hy-Road Pearl to work at the synthetic center and the Haywire might be getting sold, I just can't seem to get it to roll right for me. The HDB needs the span adjusted so it might be the ticket but wanted suggestions on bridging that medium heavy oil gap at the synthetic center. Never tried an Asymmetric either but would be open to suggestion.

Thanks!!

Have everything cleaned and adjust surfaces to create a difference in reaction needed.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Thanks for the contribution... Posted in different manufacturer sections under the impression that those in that manufacturer board would be more versed in their line of equipment.  Being that I'm open to a variety of manufacturers I like to pick the brains of the experienced from more than one.

The key item you mention is that you were bowling on old wood lanes and are now on new synthetic lanes.  On old wood, you're going to have a ton of friction naturally on the lane.  With synthetics, you don't get that luxury until the pattern really burns up.  A tip that can help is to keep the angles more square early on and keep the ball in play.  Make your spares.  Then, as the pattern naturally opens up, you'll start to get friction and can then begin swinging the ball a bit.

You really don't need to do an arsenal replacement as the Haywire IS intended for medium-heavy oil.  I'd do an oil extraction and change surfaces first with what you have.  Also, spend some practice time on those lanes to get a feel for how they play.  If you then need to look at a new ball, then do so.

Tommy, thanks! I'm thinking of taking the Haywire to 2000 then hitting it with some polish. I've got 3 games with it at the oob and 2 at 3000 and haven't quite got the roll and reaction I'm looking for on it.

That could work for you.  Having a ball with the same MicroBite cover (Roto Grip Defiant), I can tell you from first hand experience that it needs to be in oil to perform its best.  It does take changes well, but be prepared to move deeper into the lane and squaring up if need be.  If you don't have enough head oil on the lane, the cover will hook early to where it will die out in back/hit like a marshmallow.  Think flat 10, flat 8-10 split, etc.

If you're normally throwing 22-8, you may want to try something such as 22-12 or 22-14.  Or you can move deeper such as 5 with your feet, 5 with the target.  These options will get the ball into more head oil while allowing you to square up the angle a bit more.  The goal of this is to conserve energy in the ball so it can make it's move in back while allowing the ball to work as it's intended to.

I see you have a Paradox, how would that compare to the Haywire you think?

The Paradox is much stronger and it's meant for heavy oil.  A good comparison would be the Storm Lock.  Around where I live, there's only 2-3 bowling centers where I can use it as those places actually put down heavy volume and/or sport shots.

I have both the Paradox and Haywire and the Paradox is no way much stronger. The Paradox has a little more back-end but the Haywire picks up more in the mids. Honestly they are pretty close in reaction just have different shapes.

Is there another Storm/Roto ball that provides a similar motion of the Hy-Road Pearl, the smooth roll with the strong backend but can handle more oil? Except the regular Hy-Road, trying to get a bit more adventurous.

You'd probably be looking more into a Crux Pearl.  It's not identical to the Hy-Road pearl but it can handle some higher volumes.

Still though, I'd work with what you have first on surfaces to see if you can get that to match up.  Remember, the thing you mentioned was the issue of synthetic vs wood lanes.

Finding out why the Haywire isn't working for you would be the best option if available. Could be drilling, surface, or just a bad match for you overall (which is the most frustrating).

The latter wouldn't be a huge surprise to me in this case though. It seems like earlier rolling balls with very aggressive coverstocks don't match up well with people more often than other types of balls. If that's the situation then the Eternal Cell or Critical would probably fit you well. But surface adjustment and possibly redrilling should be the first routes.

Yeah I'm starting to wonder if it's just not a match for me. I'm going to see how it does with some polish first though. Maybe get it to roll the way I'd like to see. If not, I certainly have a lot of options it looks like. I'm excited to see what drops from the expo. I'm considering the Hyper Cell Skid, Swerve FX, Critical, Black Widow Red Legend Pearl, Black Widow Dark Legend, Optimus, Revolt Vengeance, Gamebreaker 2 MVP, Paradox. Yeah.. I need to start eliminating. Ideally kill super strong early rollers from the list and then keep comparing.
