Mass bias gonzo??
« on: September 20, 2006, 07:13:10 AM »
I've posted before...does it seem like Storm is moving away from mass bias?
So few of their balls have it!

It seemed like for a while, everything they made had an MB.  X-factors, some Charges, Tropicals.

It's the wheel of reincarnation at work.  MB gets hyped up, it's the big, trendy thing, and gets put into everything.  Entry angles no one thought were possible.  Recovery and angle in heavy oil.  Faster, smaller spin times.  You needed your own ball rep to tell you how to drill the things.  Then the angle got out of control and smooth, controllable, and ease of drilling are back in vogue.  Two or three years down the line and it'll be back to asyms.

Seems Like they Are Using there Mass Bias Cores On the Paradigms. There Putting them On the HIGH-END only Which Is fine. The Domination Will be another Paradigm Core ball so Still making asyemtric just not in everything Which Is fine by me

Right now I am digging the current fad of controllable.  Smooth and controllable rocks.

Well The Domination Is suppose To be A Solid Reactor With Rad Core So that should be up your alley

The main reason why we have gone away from mass bias balls is very simple : simplicity for pro shop operators. We talked about this very topic at length during our trade show seminars. Unfortunately there are a lot of shop operators that just dont understand mass bias technology. The tech dept receives dozens of calls every day from people saying "my ball doesnt hook" or "my ball clips every hole". In most cases the RAD was put in the wrong location, even though the drilling instructions clearly point out what NOT to do.Now i'm not saying that there arent a ton of shop operators out there that get it and do it right, i'm just saying that this was the best way to simplify things for everybody. Another reason is that not everybody can use mass bias balls with regularity. You have to have a pretty good speed/rev-rate match to effectively use mass bias balls in a lot of cases. Unfortunately i've seen a lot of bad matches, making the ball look pretty bad. Symetrical cores are easier to drill and match up to each individual style. There is still a need for assymetical balls, but with the strength of todays coverstock technology it isnt quite as prevelant.

Well said Jeff. You hit the nail on the head.m It's not a case of "putting 3 holes" in the ball anymore. You have to have a clue to drill balls today!

Jeff I agree with you.I mean there is a reason why Ebonite put that Sticker on the One series and that BIG RED X on there drill sheets. There Are proshops who don't know better and or don't care what the Sheet says.At least by keeping the Rad Cores in the high End Balls Hopefully people who want those technology Balls will already be working with a Top Notch ProShop Operator.

Unfortunately, most people who buy high end balls do so because it's high end.  We all know high end balls hook more, so that's what everyone wants.

I agree with Jeff regarding the simplicity of drilling symmetric balls.  Not many symmetric balls can't be laid out using the standard layout ideas.  I think most drillers know that asyms are different and have to be treated differently (most prevalently, using the MB instead of CG), but it's only in the last two years or so that we've seen asymmetrics as strong as they are now.  Five years ago, ten years ago, a ball with a 0.025" intermediate diff would be unheard of.  More modest asyms with 0.015" or below, still strong enough to be influential but not so strong that you have to take special care with MB placement.  You could put a label drill on a Freak or El Nino and not be too worried about it.  Can't do that with a Vanguard, RAD, or Robo ball.

I can see how it might not even occur to someone to read the drill sheets when they've been drilling balls, even asyms, for a long time.  They'd have to know that something's different about the new balls.  It's not stubbornness or stupidity, they just don't know that there's something new to know.
