Atomic Charge not turning.....
« on: February 11, 2005, 02:18:13 PM »
Had a customer come in and want a heavy oil ball....he couldn't wait for my boss to get there with his order.....so I drill him up an Atomic Charge.....The drill pattren is pin directly under bridge and cg kicked out 1 1/16 of and inch to the right and 7/8 of an inch in the thumb quadrant....he called me tonight and told me the ball wasn't hooking at all |V|.....now he plays up in the middle of the oil when I watched him throw and he doesn't have alot of revs or axis tilt.....but I did notice that the ball didn't hook like I have seen before....but he was in the middle of the oil....I told him to speed it up alittle and play more outside and the ball hooked more.....is this my error in drilling or possibly where he is playing and releasing the ball....in the past year our shop has only had one ball that didn't do what the customer thought it would.....so someone please give me some idea to what is going on here....Thanks

you answered your own question,..a ball can only do so much,..take him out to the lanes and move him right, and show him a few tips to get more roll and tilt..the ball sounds like it's drilled fine...

YOu'd have to sand an Atomic to 120 grit to get it to hook in oil when he has no revs. Your customer does not seem to have much sense bowling-wise if he expects any ball to hook in oil, throwing up the middle with no revs. I suggest you watch a newbie bowl next time before suggesting any ball for any condition. You just can't count on their having any bowling sense.

I subbed in a handicap league recently and my friend's (he's older and retired) son, about 35-ish, whine to me about his Ultimate Inferno not hooking. He was basically doing the EXACT SAME THING AS YOU DESCRIBE FOR YOUR CUSTOMER: he was dumping down between the 3rd and 4th arrow, with no revs, no rotation, all forward roll and then whining about it not hooking. I was speechless, LITERALLY! I wanted to scream at him but I held it in and just walked away.
You should, too.

The problem is I suggested the ball and drilled it....and he is not happy with the reaction.....now check this out he has a Punisher that he got from our shop....it has pretty much 5/8 positive side and 0 on the fingers and thumb....he can turn it pretty well but he rolls it slow....with the Charge it think it might be a CG problem being too far in the thumb quadrant.....but that's the reason I drilled it like that.....so he could throw it faster to get some better carry out of it....it just boogles my mind that he won't move outside to get the ball to move (don't know for sure if he didn't try it), but from what I saw at our house when he threw that ball outside with some speen it actually jumped thru the nose when he hit straight down 10.....oh forgot to mention that the ball is scotchbrited to 400....another part of the mystery here...

BAPS_Eric,

I have to offer this opinion: the man is a bowling ignoramus, arrogant and stubborn in the extreme. Provide any satisfaction you deem acceptable and disassociate yourself from him forever more.

The Atomic will "move" even with some thumb weight (all but ignorable with dynamic cores) much more than any Punisher, on medium or heavier oil.

On the side, Which ball was sanded to 400 grit? It was not clear.

Guide him to another local pro shop and let him be there problem.
He is never going to be wrong. I had some customers like that also and they found trass isnt any greener anywhere else.

Actually he is a quite knowledgable bowler.....and sorry I forgot to mention this.....his mark is usually 13-14 out to 10-11 and back in....to me he doesn't need to play that line in any house that is heavy oil...but that is his natural shot.....but I do have to try and correct my mistake....and after talking to one of the other guys that works with our company....he told me that the core in that ball is tall and because of the pin placement on the drilling it won't let the ball flip over and get into its roll since he is a high track player....so A.) I can put a X-Hole in it to see if that would help or maybe some type of surface...or B.) Redrill with the pin more right and level with the ring finger.....I mean this is one outta prolly 150 balls I have drilled this year that hasn't had the desired reaction that the customer wanted....the thing is I just am very hard on myself for customer service and want all to be happy (which never happens all the time) but I try....so thanks guys and gals....Eric

What you just mentioned Eric was my first inclination....

the cg being 1-1/16 right of the centerline is not a problem but I questioned the pin under the bridge. To me that will get way too much length to give you the look you'd want in an oil ball unless the bowler has some serious hand.

I'd suggest getting the pin right of and slightly below the ring with the cg kicked slightly right.

But then too you know your customer a lot better than I do so it's just my take on things.
