First Outing With Sure Fire
« on: December 30, 2007, 02:56:34 PM »
Hello Everybody! I just got a Storm Sure Fire with Christmas Money, and have finally tried it out. The Sure Fire is meant to be a benchmark ball in my arsenal. I am a stroker who likes to play the outside and track area. As a result my ball driller and I decided to put some polish to its oob finish.

I decided to test it out on Saturday Night, around 10 PM. Obviously a mistake since I had drunks to the left and right of my lane. But that wasn't the main thing. I just couldn't get this ball to consistently hit the pocket playing anywhere from 1-20. I had to play deep and everytime I hit the pocket, I was leaving weak sevens or ringing tens.

I think it was a combination of the time of day and coverstock preperation. My ball driller reccomended this after past knowledge of my game. I know that it's a great ball, he's drilled up several for himself. However, I couldn't get it to string strikes together. But when it did strike, there was a lot of pin action, something there can never be too much of.

I guess my question is, should I give it another outing, closer to fresh oil that I will be bowling on with the shine on the ball before tweaking the coverstock? And if so sould I bring it back to oob finish of 4000, since I don't want a total monster, just a nice smooth move. Or should I try something else? Thanks for your help!

You would be a fool not to try it again, with that said i'd try it in the current coverstock prep again and see if the ball will work on something fresh, it seems as if you were bowling on an non-fresh condition forcing it to work.

That is just my interpretation though, take it as you wish.

I am planning on throwing it again, looking for something fresher, which is what I bowl on in my league. I don't know if I was forcing it to work, it was just the first series of throws with a new ball. The success I did see was encouraging, I just think that the conditions weren't right for the balls layout and surface prep. I will post my results. Thanks for the input.

After one outing you shouldn't feel too bad to have a not so great one. It took me a few weeks of bowling 2 or 3 times a week to get used to my T-Road Pearl, but it's paying off in spades now. I would also agree to keep it at whatever finish you have now, give it a go, and then make adjustments from there. Lanes at 10PM in open bowling are usually shot, at least in my experiences. So don't be discouraged, go out there and destroy some pins.

Thanks for the advice. I had a simmilar experience with my T-Road Solid, it took some experimentation but it's now one of the best pieces, and hardest hitting in my arsenal.

I've tried the Sure Fire again on a Fresh Patern at a different house for me. Only bowled there twice. From what I've seen The Sure Fire is a versatile ball. I can play anywhere from 1-25 with it. This ball has a nice smooth and controlable roll, something that I look for in a bowling ball. But this ball's strength is right up the track. Being a stroker, it's great to be able to do that with the right piece of equipment.

I've tried Storm before, but now I'm not going to try anything else. Thank You Storm for making such great bowling balls!
