Jolt Pearl?
« on: June 02, 2008, 06:34:48 AM »
I'm looking for a good ball that gets easy length with a mild backend for short patterns. I'm wondering how well this ball works with the #4 drilling on the instructions.
I think my biggest problem with what balls I already have is my ball speed is around 14-15mph & my rev rate is too high for this speed. This is causing all of my stuff to read too early & take off on the backends like someone kicked it. For me, it creates a ball reaction that's very difficult to control.

If your ball speed is in the 14-15 mph range, IMHO I do not feel that the Jolt Pearl would be the best way to go.  I had one punched up, and could get it down the lane easy, but this ball really ripped on the backend. Especially if I hit any dry at all.  I think a Tropical might suit you better for what you are looking for.  I have one punched up with the same drilling as my Jolt Pearl, and the Tropical was tamer for me.  Don't get me wrong, the Tropical still hooks, but it gets down the lane, with a much smoother reaction and moved less in the back than my Jolt Pearl.  For the price, you just can't beat the Tropical.  Just my 2 cents, hope this helps.

I've already got a tropical & it doesn't get down the lane far enough for me & the backend is vicious.
What's really strange to me about the tropical is on synthetics, the ball rolls very similar to the illustration shown on storm's site. Also another factor about the synthetics is, that house actually puts down a decent pattern to work with. The house I normally bowl has gotten extremely cheap since christmas & you're lucky if you get a 30ft pattern. They claim it's a 40ft pattern but I don't believe it because over memorial day weekend I got the chance to bowl on a cheetah pattern & had to move 15 boards further right when lining up than what I do here on the local house shot. It's an absolute joke, the pattern they've been putting down for this summer league. If you can't play a straight shot similar to norm duke or walter ray, you're not going to score due to your ball constantly over-reacting. It's just frustrating.

actually cheetah is one of the shortest oil patterns and dryer in the middle of the lane then almost all the tour or sport shots so know what your talkin about before you start ripping people.

chadw1974,

The Jolt Pearl and the Tropical are just fine for what you say you need them. You just need to adjust the drilling pattern to reduce the backend of these pearls. I'm surprised your driller hasn't suggested this option.

Try putting the pins in the 5", 5.5" or even 6" from your PAP, depending on the actual oil and your rev rate.

Modifying the ball's surface will also help. Since many of Storm's polished pearls use a "1500 grit polished" surface, many people have found success setting the surface to 4000 grit and leaving it matte or dull that is, unpolished. Many people find they get much more control with this finish, it's slightly earlier, actually handles slightly more carrydown, and has a much less jumpy backend.

It's not an absolute joke, it's a PBA pattern and it's tough for a reason. The reason you're having to line up to the right is because whereas Cheetah is dry on the outermost boards, it's a very flat, heavy-volume laydown in the middle. If you've ever seen the graph it actually looks like a flat sport shot more than anything else except the outsides are supposed to offer free hook.

I bowled PBAX recently and averaged almost 175 for every other pattern but Cheetah. For Cheetah, I averaged a big ol' 136 for 9 games. It may have been partially the house's doing (there wasn't a lot of free hook at the gutter) but mostly it was me for not adjusting. Guys on my pair were averaging deuce. If they can do it, the only thing keeping others from not doing it is their own mistakes.
