Title: Ball above the Natural?
Post by: strikestriketapped on April 06, 2011, 07:31:25 AM
Looking for a ball to fit between my Onyx Vibe and Natural. Getting tired of having to swing the lane with the Onyx, it's not really in my comfort zone. I was thinking a Tropical Heat, Jolt Pearl, etc. Suggestions? Can be either Storm or Roto-Grip.

Good Luck...big gap there. I don't have a Storm or Roto answer...however, either of the Motiv Recon Rx-1s should fit in there with drilling/cover prep kept in mind.

Plenty of balls fit in that gap....Tropical Storm?
Tropical Heat would probably end up being too close to your Onyx Vibe.
Little known fact: In Russian "Hope" and "Change" translate to "Tax" and "Spend"

Look for something in the Roto Grip planet line, I think anything in that line will fit between your Natural and Onyx Vibe, something like the Neptune or Mars would be ideal for that gap
If it doesnt have to be Storm/Roto then the Recon would be a nice fit as well, the orange (solid) is the closest thing to the Pluto ive found.
Just my 2 cents
Only throw the good stuff, Roto/Global but Motiv is slowly growing on me. BowlingChat.net RIP Sawbones

Hammer Backlash, pick either or, and drill it tame, adjust surface as needed.

I have a Track 300C. Drilled 4.5" pin to PAP, pin over. Could this work? Maybe 2000 polished? I keep my Onyx at 4000 abralon and the Natural at 4000 abralon.

In the Storm/Roto line, you will want to consider a Roto Grip Dark Star or a Storm Tropical Heat pearl. If you are looking to go a little weaker than those 2, the Storm Tropical is a good bet, being a little milder reactive. You also may want to hold off for the new Storm Tropical Breeze which is an all new core/cover coming out soon.
Now, keep in mind the Storm Tropical Heat hybrid (only in black/silver color) or the RG Rising Star hybrid both are going to be stronger than any of the other balls mentioned above. Even though they're both great (and I own a Rising Star), you will end up with a reaction closer to the Vibe.
It's a unique world. Be yourself.

The Onyx is actually a pretty aggressive ball, comparable to the Hy-Road from Storm, except smoother at the breakpoint. I would think about the 2Fast, Tropical Heat Pearl or the Rising Star(RG). If the goal is to play straighter in the friction, than make sure to tell the pro shop guy and either go with an Over the Label type of drill to even out the backend reaction. You may even need to go to a 2" pin to pap drill with a higher polish on the cover to get it through the front. I have a Freeze drilled this way with some extra shine for just such an occassion, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.
My choice would be one of these 3 balls with a stacked layout for use when the Onyx starts burning up too early and a cleaner look thru the front and "rev up and flip" is needed downlane. But that's me. Experience is teaching me that sometimes playing outside of your "comfort zone" is what's required to score no matter what ball you throw.

I just posted a similar thread and decided on the Midnight Vibe. It's weaker than the Tropical Heat Hybrid, stronger then the Tropical Heat Pearl, similar to the Dark Star. From my research, I beleive it has a stronger back end motion than all of the aforementioned except for the Tropical heat Hybrid. Also has a big core for strong pocket power. Price point is great too.
Mine comes in tomorrow and I am deciding right now wether to have it drilled with pin above ring finger (more back end) or below the ring finger (earlier and more gradual break point). BTW, I have a Nano and Victory Road for heavier oil conditions. The Vibe will be my medium to lighter oil ball.
Best,
MK

Drill it weak to fit between The THH and the THP. And for me it might still overlap the THP, the THP is not a weak ball......
