ball death
« on: August 10, 2003, 09:14:13 AM »
Ok, i keep on hearing about you people talk about how thier NEW storm ball seems to die after a couple dozen games or so.

Well i had this happen with my X Factor when after about 30 games.   But for the first three weeks, this ball was a MONSTER, i mean on anything less than 50ft of oil this, ball would miss brooklyn after throwing the ball over 4th arrow out to board 5 at 20+ mph.  And this was outa box condition too, and it wasnt any wild stacked drilling either, the ball had 3.84 oz of top weight, and the ball was drilled with the pin about 3/4inch above fingers and cg slightly kicked out, with a small hole off my pap.  But anyways now the ball is my fav and first ball to goto.  And gives me the best read on any condition i face and will tell me what ball i might hafta switch too.

Now i wouldnt say my X-Factor has died, but i would say that it has tamed down.  It is way more control-able, and i now hit it with 800grit, when i clean it and give it a touch up.   So i now when you say your ball has died, or you think it has died, is that because it wont come back when you play 25-5 and throw it 25mph. Or did you ever think the ball maybe burning up before it makes the turn.  I mean i have a TraumaResponse and unless i am bowling on a flood, the ball burns up at 30ft, does it mean this ball is dead???   I mean i have a old ThunderStorm and El Nino that still hook like they are brand NEW!  and those two balls have over 150+ games a piece on them.

It's probably just wearing a track into the ball.  Of course the track is going to be smoother since it comes in contact with the lane the most.  Coverstock might be too over aggressive out of box or something.  Don't really have an explaination.

It has been my experience that the new bowling balls lose their bite for the same reason that a sprint car loses the right rear. Too much wheelspin on too dry of a track and you get a soft tire that gets packed and loses grip.

After doing some extensive talking to some of the bowling industry's top guys, the problem seems to be the plasticizer migrating to the surface of the ball due to the heat generated by the friction. This was not from just the Ebonite guys but I talked to all of the manufacturers and they said they believe in the process and that their R&D departments all have Hook Agains on order.

I don't think it's about oil or balls dying anymore. I think Ebonite has gotten to the answer but time will tell. I have my Hook Again arriving tomorrow. Anyone who is interested in sending me a dead ball I'll see what happens. I offered to do a few for the price of return shipping and that's all. After initial interest in the idea, I have not heard back on the topic.

Anybody????

Well, like Lefty said, i think its just a case of people saying well for the first 30 games my ball hooked X amount of boards and now it only hooks Y amount of boards.  I mean i like my X-Factor more since it tamed down, because its more user friendly, and i can play up second arrow or play over 4th arrow.  And since i hit it up with 800grit, it has given me the best all around reaction on any type of condition that is out there.   But now i have a friend who bought the Deuce when it first came out and he cant use the ball on anything around here because the ball burns up and hits like a mush ball, but he took the ball to Nationals and it saved him. because of the condition down there, and he is probably one of the best bowlers in the state who isnt a PRO.  And i know of several guys who bought the Deuce and it basically saved them in Nationals, because of the condition they faced.
