Ball down from Lights out
« on: November 11, 2013, 09:12:50 PM »
What ball in Storm's current line up will be a good ball to transition to once the Lights Out starts checking up? I thought the IQ tour pearl would've been an option since it has a pearlized version of the same cover that's on the Lights Out, but with a weaker core. But everything I've read says the IQ tour pearl is stronger than the Lights Out.

If you're having issues with the Lights Out checking up early the IQTP would be going the opposite direction. It would most likely be earlier yet depending on drill. Agree with SV on this one. I'd have to say a Breeze.

The IQTP has a stronger core than the lights out and would definitely be a step in the wrong direction. You have the breeze line or naturals as stated before. It depends how far of a step down you want to have. I personally like the natural line when a ball like the Lights out becomes too much. Urethanes tend to be smoother and a little more predictable when the lanes are that dry for me. Breeze vs natural would be a personal preference thing at that point.

I would go over to roto grips line, the core inside the wrecker/shatter, scream/shout allows me play straighter when everything else is too much.  Id say scream 2013 yellow teal is your best option.  Or if u can wait til january the uproar may be a good option. Normally id be urging you to get a wrecker as I did not experience the strength of the wrecker that everyone else did, but you have a lights out(to me thats the same ball but storms option). The wrecker has a core that performs well on dry lanes in my opinion. 9 times outta 10, I can switch to wrecker, ACTUALLY MOVE RIGHT.. and play the fried track area...when I can do that...im in great shape.  Im thinking you can do that with the yellow/teal scream.  Get that new scream and post your findings!

Just out of curiosity, what determines the strength of a core?  I always thought the differential dictates track flare, which determines the hook potential/strength of a core.

I guess I misspoke here. The iq core is not necessarily stronger, bc as far as strength/flare potential, you're right, that's determined by the differential. But with the rg being so much lower on the IQTP core it will hook earlier. So what I mean by going the wrong direction is that it will start earlier, and from what I've seen its stronger ball overall than the lights out. Sorry about the confusion there.

Understood. Yeah I was a little confused, you had me all messed up. Lol... Thanks for the input.  I'll probably punch up a breeze and see how it does.  If I use the same layout that I have on my Lights Out will the Breeze naturally give me the seperation I'm looking for or will the Breeze still be weaker if I use a stronger layout than whats on my Lights Out?

I have a low pin, low hole Lights Out hand scuffed with a 3000 pad. My low pin Hyroad Pearl (4000) and high pin, box shiny IQTP are both longer and more able to be used on drier conditions than my Lights Out.

So, for me, the IQTP is under the Lights Out.

Strong and weak are relative terms.  The cover core combo on the IQTP handle heavier oil and rolls earlier than the Lights Out.

If you have dry, the Lights Out may seem stronger because it is more angular on the back part of the lane, especially if the heads are burnt. On the same condition, the IQTP will struggle to get through the heads (grip and roll earlier because of the more agressive cover/core combo) and move less or hit weaker on the backend.

You mentioned the IQTP having a more aggressive cover... I thought they had the same cover, difference being the IQTP has a pearl version of the R2S cover and the Lights Out has a hybrid version of the R2S cover.

What are you talking about? R2S Pearl IS NOT stronger than R2S Hybrid, no matter how you slice it.

Drill a Lights Out strong and put some hair on it. It isnt this weak ball some are making it out to be.

The core of the IQTP is better at handling heavier oil is what everyone is getting at here. The cover on the lights out is certainly stronger being a hybrid. Either way, I don't see the IQTP being much, if any, of a step down from the lights out. And like it was stated before, if the IQTP is struggling through the heads and burning up, the lights out will seem like a stronger ball on that condition because it will have more energy in the back part of the lane and be more angular. Bottom line is, if you are looking to step down from a lights out, the IQTP isn't going to be the ball for most people.

The tropical breeze, depending on which one you get (pearl vs hybrid) will be a step down from a lights out no matter how you drill it. It has a very weak core and cover.

To Bill's point, I had a Tropical heat hybrid Black/silver which is a very similar ball to the lights out. I bought a scream as a step down ball and found that even this ball is quite a bit stronger than they market it for. It is certainly not as strong as your lights out but I don't think it will be the separation you are looking for, at least not from my experience with it.

My shout was strong for a game or two....there is separation from my wrecker to my shout.  The two do their job well...
