Benchmark Ball?

So for Christmas, my mom and myself are getting dad a new ball, and I want to get him a benchmark ball to possibly build a small arsenal around. I also want the ball to have a coverstock that's easily tweakable, for dad loves to play with his cover as needed. Dad's a stroker, loves to play up the boards, and the house he bowls at is usually pretty oily. I was thinking the T-Road Solid would be a good choice. It's a solid ball for the oil, and in my experiences, this coverstock will take to polishing or more surface quite easily. I've also heard the Sure Fire is a good benchmark ball also. What are your thoughts out there in Storm land?

Well for me, my benchmark ball is the Shift.  I don't think it gets enough credit out here.  I've used on fresh Med to hev & on light w/mostly the tight inside line between 2nd & 3rd arrow.  But I saw Scroggins use it on the men's tour playing an inside tight line & saw Liz Johnson use it at the USBC tournament going pretty much up the boards but just inside her competitor.  So it is versatile.  I've also seen the T-Road solid use both a little inside (Robert Smith) & up the boards (Norm Duke) on a video on Storms website.  It was an outdoor match this past summer but I don't know the conditions of the lanes though.  I personally don't think you could go wrong w/either.  Shift is asymetric core w/r2s pear particle & T-Road Solid is obiously solid & r2s but  w/symetric core.  Find out what your dad's best ball was & what type cover & core & maybe that will help make up your mind what to get him. BTW, That's a pretty cool gift.

Dad's favorite ball of all time was his antique Red Pulse. He has 3 300's with it, and a 290. He loved how smooth it was and how predictable it was off the spot. He still has it and just messes around with it when he's practicing. I figure the T-Road Solid and Pulse are both solids and symmetric cores. The Pulse has a much lower RG, but that can be overcome with the drill layout.

Then I'd go T-Road.  The T-Road is cheaper than the Shift also.  Hope it works out good for your dad.

I think you forgetting THE benchmark ball in the Storm arsenal just because it is a bit older now.  I am talking about the Thunderstruck.  Also a solid, it is a great ball for a stroker with superior hit.

Don't get me wrong, I like what I've seen from the T-Road and I have one that I am getting to drill for someone else but in no way would I call it a benchmark ball - it is too strong.

The other balls that I would also consider in this range are the Shift, Agent, and Sure Fire.  All of these balls cover a similar range of boards with slightly different trajectories.  Of these I'd probably go with a Sure Fire.

I would have to agree with the T-Road Solid very smooth and with very nice continuation through the pins. Of course it will need a little bit of oil to really do to what it is made to do, but it takes surface adjustments very well. I don't think you will be disappointed with the T-Road Solid.

I still use the Thunderstruck as the benchmark, but I am curious how a polished T-Road Solid would work.  Again, I would love a comparison between these two with the same drilling and both polished but I don't think anyone has made it yet.

I feel that a good benchmark ball is what works well for you. I have a Shift and it is outstanding, though I would not say that it is my benchmark ball.

Before I would have said that the PYRO that I had was my benchmark ball. But now I would have to say that it is the Awesome Finish. A friend of mine says that his benchmark ball is his RotoGrip Oddessey that he has.

You would need to find a company that works well for your style and then find a ball that you can call YOUR benchmark ball.
