Author Topic: Can I use a Natural Pearl as a Spare ball? (Read 2666 times)

Just wondering if anyone out there has had any success with this ball as spare ball.

It would be great to carry another ball, that also could be used on drier or broken down conditions rather than having a plastic ball wasting space in my bag.

Also, is the Natural Pearl a slight step down in overall reaction to the Natural?

If a lot of the pros can use the Natural as a spare ball I don't see why you can't. Me, I prefer using plastic.

I've had success with the ball as my go to ball for league nights. Plus it also makes a pretty decent spare ball.

I use whatever ball works for me.

You can throw any ball as a spare ball, no revolutions = no hook. Throw it hard and straight, anything will work as a spare ball.

Agree with 69, a columbia staffer i bowl with uses his strike ball for spare shots. Just rolls it end over end, almost back up. Shot his ten pins with his world beater last night. Hard and straight and try to roll end over end as much as possible. My dad uses a Natural for his spares and the Natural Pearl is longer and a little less reaction i would say....

The problem with socialism is, you eventually run out of other people's money too...

Thanks for all the advise so far, I stay behind my plastic for the most part, but it does have some slight movement, but I thought as long as I need a new spare ball anyway, might as well make the most of it.

I used to use plastic to shoot spares but I throw a cut shot, a sort of a back up ball at the 6-10, but I have difficulty throwing the same shot at a 4 or 7 pins. It's hard to throw the cut across lane, and your body at the 4/7 pins. Alot of times the ball may back up from those pins since the cut shot direction brings it away from those pins or hydroplanes sometimes on oil, thus I use a urethane natural to shoot spares. I will use the cut shot with the ball to shoot the 6 and 10 pins, and then use a little more straighter, hand on the side, broken type release to shoot the 4 and 7 pins.

I use the Natural solid for a spare ball. Switched from plastic and like it better. Still flatten my releasse a bit, but the urethane won't skate when it hits oil the way plastic sometime does. I particularly like it on 3-6-10 combinations. Ball won't skate by the 3 as easy, but still deflects nicely off it even if it is hooking just a bit. I have always been a good spare shooter, but I think it has improved with urethane

I use my strike ball for my spare ball as well. For the ten I just take whatever ball I'm using (most often my VE) and just throw it hard and straight around 19-21mph for the ten pin so it'll stay straight and about 16-17 for the 7 pin. However I like this idea of using said ball for spares. Wouldn't have to throw as hard to keep it straight on the ten.

Like many i use the natural solid for a spare ball.

I was apprehensive the first night i changed from an ice storm to the natural but after a few shot in the practice it felt like a regular spare ball.

A slight word of caution though, if you do come across some quantity of oil in the centre of the lane as a righty it can still hang(almost back up) a touch down lane causing misses of things like 4's etc right, just like polyester. I find that if i see the likes of those conditions I just get a little bit firmer with the speed and commit more to the shot and 4's and 7's are easy.

And the natural is a great strike ball too! over here in the U.K. the conditions are mostly very short and light so mine gets lots of use.

I think I'm definitely going with the Natural Pearl as a spare ball, thanks for all the advice so far, very honest and open. The funny thing is as soon as I started talking about getting another spare ball, I've been as solid as ever with my current one, like it's afraid to lose it's job! lol
