The Shift
« on: May 26, 2007, 07:14:45 AM »
I currently use the shift as my medium oil ball. It works great as a compliment to my Black Widow as it picks up a bit earlier roll and is better on sloppier backends on Medium-Medium heavy lanes.

Though the ball is high end my proshop operator and a few league bowler and I have found this ball not to be the big hooker but It does cover some boards. As I've gotten some real use out of it It really rolls well and hits above average it doesn't hook the lane. I'm happy its not overly aggressive as it is my control ball and I really like it.

Anyone else notice that the ball isn't the big hooker but more of a control ball?

I just threw my Shift for the first time today, was saving it for Nationals, but wanted to throw it once before I got up there.  The Shift was a pretty big hooking ball for me, it's drilled the same as my Special Agent, and outhooks it by a few boards.  This could just be the stronger backend that gave the appearance of more hook, but the Special Agent is my control ball right now.  The Special Agent is killing racks for me right now, and the Shift did today also when I gave it enough room.  I have trouble on my easy house shot with the Domination, and probably would with the Shift as well, due to so much dry on the outside, but I can't wait to get these Storm balls up to Reno.

The one I threw was a big hook that was nice and smooth.  It continued all the way through the pins pretty nicely.

Alot of mixed reviews here. Many liked that it got down lane fairly easy, and had a big hook, and others weren't fans of particle pearl.

The Shift is a great ball to have. My first experience is based from a Shift bowling ball that my proshop has with a turbo switch grip for clients to try out. I saw it for the first time and ask if I can throw it. Since I have turbo switch grips now in my bowling balls. I used my inner thumb grip in the Shift. A friend comes over and says, "Watch out, that ball hooks a lot and I could not control it." So I threw three medium speed shots to observe how it reacts down the lane. It did hooked with a definite sharp turn. So I said to my friend, "I am going to throw a game with the Shift." The layout was with the pin a half an inch to the right of the ring finger and the key about an inch and a half from the thumb. 3 inch pin. Started with the first 8 strikes, thumb did not come out clean in the ninth frame and left the 6 10. Finished with a 278. Throw was standing at the 30 board behind the first row of dots on the approach hitting the 4th arrow towards the breakpoint on 10 board. The lanes were freshly oiled because league was going to play in 30 minutes. I told the proshop employee that I will buy the Shift but only the one they have for testing. He will call the owner see if they will sell it. The answer was no but will have first take when they put it up for sale. Still thinking about getting a new one but it will be after I sell about 10 bowling balls that I have besides my actual arsenal.

The Shift is a medium to medium heavy type ball. I get alot of movement down the lane with it. To compare it to my Total NV....it is pretty close, but I think the SHIFT is a tad more angular at the breakpoint.

Hmm, mixed opinions, not suprising.

Thus far it hasn't really over hooked for me nor can I get it to really flip of the spot (even on the great wall). It really rolls of the spot for me even when I change my release. You can see in my profile the layout.

I was just trying to stir up a few things, guess the few of us in my area are exceptions as the ball seems rolly, not a bad thing at all just our observations.

Interesting, my shift is laid out the same way except in reverse because I am left handed.  Oh, and I have small diameter but deep correctional hole to make it legal. It's supposed to make the transition smoooth.

I tried it out today for the first time and the lanes were kind of torched except for a strip of oil around 10-15. I found that the Shift worked quite well standing 35 and laying the ball between the third and fourth arrow looking at around the 10 board at 40 feet.  It cleared the heads and mids and then made a right turn.  For the one game I tried that, I went front five, big four, strike, ringing 7 pin, ringing 7 pin, ringing 7 pin, strike.  So except for the big four that resulted from softer speed, I was in the pocket the entire time.  So it's goes long and turns.  My X-factor, with pin of the center of the fingers, sat in the oil and didn't make the hard turn even though I was ten boards left using the same target.

Anyway, that's my limited report on the Shift.  I am a tweener with 16-17 mph.

Just keep your release firm and strong and the league nights will be yours from now on.

Fix the fit and your PBA league has somebody to deal with in any pattern with the Shift.

Is this based on the one you threw at Rick's place or did you purchase one?
