Box Surface
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:13:05 AM »
Ok i had some trouble getting my Invasion to get through the heads with box surface. So i hit it with a 2000 abralon pad and it got through the same as a 4000 box. So i hit it with a 4000 pad and it made it shinier. So i threw it and now i think it truly has its full hook potential.

this is because the OOB is 360, lightly with 500 then 4000
so thats WAY rougher then straight 4000.

but if 2000, 4000 over the box works, thats all that matters.

Storm actually does not go down to 360 anymore, their base is 500 grit abralon and then 4000.

If the P4000 grit pad made it shiny, then the 4000 is too worn and no longer at P4000 grit but much finer. Use a fresh pad. Even after using a 4000 grit pad, you should not see any shine, only a matte, flat surace.

Jeff,

I used a new 4000 on my VG and after finishing, it was rather shiny.  I think I might have been using too much water, but it did finish shiny.  I'm going to try again with much less water.

since when? please explain, show evidence.

thats a bold statement!

because according to storm the 360 grit is equivalent to their rounding the ball process. in which AFTER that they use 500, then straight to final finish.

so unless storm has completely changed the way they are rounding the balls, i doubt their surface process has changed.

The Evidence is when i called them.  they said that when the ball comes off the lathe it goes straight to a 500 grit pad.  they did completely change how they resurface balls.  it goes lathe, 500, than what ever the final finish, unless it is a polished ball.

500 grit, than a 4000 pad?  That's a weird way to get to 4000.  Does that mean the ROF is 500 pad, then 1000 pad?

I feel like doing that, it really doesn't matter what the "finish" is because all that matters is the 500 underneath and not easing up the grits.

if you use a storm surface factory machine then you use 500 grit and not 360. But, i did hear that they were skipping 360 on solids and I believe they use 360 on pearls. 360 then Storm step 2 polish.

Barry,

If you''re using a fresh P4000 grit Abralon or SiaAir Velvet pad on a ball that is ready for a 4000 grit pad (it should be at its proper level, P500 grit or P2000 grit), you need relatively light pressure for a short period of time (20 - 30 seconds for each of 2 sides or 15-20 seconds for each of 4 sides or 10 seconds for each of 6 sides).

This abrasive, silicon carbide, is really sharp and really digs in easily.

I suspect you''re pressing too hard for too long. Not a matter of water.

Brunswick too. Some of theirs is 500 grit, then 2000 grit. Others are 500 grit, then 4000 grit.

Everyone's on this freaking bandwagon.

That''s interesting.  Let''s take the new Jigsaw Corner as an example.  The ball comes 500 pad, then 4000 pad.  If I were to take this same ball, go 360 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 - 4000, how different will my reaction be?  Has anybody tried?  I have my ideas, but I''d love to hear some stories and experiences.
