building a storm arsenal
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:51:06 AM »
I was a huge storm fan for a while and started buying other stuff for a while....but now I am going back to Storm and am wondering how to rebuild my arsenal. I have bought the Virtual Gravity. Now I am wondering what to get for when the VG is a little too much ball. Was thinking either the Hy-Road or the T-Road Solid. What do you other Storm fans recommend??? And then for the third ball for when they are getting drier....what do you recommend for that. Thanks to everyone who replies to this topic.

Make sure you get the Hy-Road, it is one of the most versatile balls you can buy, you wont go wrong with that ball.

I have the 2nd Dimension as my step down ball when the VG is too much. I've been experimenting with the cover and have found the most success when its at 4000 abralon (compared to OOB of 1500 polish).

I was considering getting the second dimension or the gravity shift so that I would have something pearl to go with the solid VG.

If u r just looking for a 3 ball arsenal, i would do VG, hy-road, & either a somewhat weakly drilled t-road pearl, or a street rod pearl.

I will say that i LOVE my 2nd dimension, but its fairly close to my hyroad, with more pop off the dry.  The main reason i would choose the hyroad over the 2nd would be that when the lanes break down, moving deeper with my hy-road is MUCH more effective than my 2nd is.  The 2nd is just WAY too strong off the dry when they really start to break down, the hy-road is much smoother in transision as well.

Well going on what you have if you like the motion of your virtual you could get a gravity shift since its the same core and a pearl cover of the VG. Also sevenpin63 I would have to agree with you on the hyroad being one of the most versatile balls that you can buy but I also have to say the same thing with the T-Road solid its the same thing also one of the most versatile balls I have ever own and seen. It doesn't get named ball of the year for nothing you know lol. Either one of those three balls would be great step downs from the VG. The T-Road solid if you still want something strong and a bit more rolly so maybe you can keep a smoother reaction. The hyroad which would be the longest off the three in my option and have a really good clean midlane read and most angular. Then with the gravity which is very clean as well not as clean as the hyroad but will be the strongest in the midlane out of these three and off the point in most cases out of the three from what I have seen. I don't think you can go wrong with either three but my money would be the hyroad  just because even thought its a hybrid(more pearl then solid I think) it is still very strong and allows you to do whatever you want to with your hand. (maybe ball of the year 2009?) If the second dimension was brough up more I think out of the three that I talked about it is the strongest in the midlane by far even more then the gravity bit more smoother off the point but still very continuous. Just as a side note I still push maybe towards the hyroad just depends on reaction you looking for and throughout your arsenal how many balls u want.  Hope this helps.

One of the best simple 3 ball arsenals right now is:

Virtual Gravity: Lots of hook, ball flat out moves and handles oil well
Hyroad: Most versatile ball i have thrown, you can drill this ball to do just about anything, and it takes to surface changes very well...great benchmark ball for me...
Street Rod Pearl: Great for when the heads start to go, smooth consistent move off the dry for a pearl.  No surprises...

I throw in a 2nd dimension or a rapid fire pearl as a 4th ball to give me a different look than the hyroad and im set...

I like Britton's three, but for me there is way too much of a jump from a Virtual to a HY-Road.  Unless you typically run into real dry where a Street Rod would fit or you can't migrate enough left I would go with:

Virtual Gravity
Second Dimension
HY-Road

For me, these three will complement each other better through typical transition.  Also, I'd like to stress for you not to hesitate to alter the surfaces to match exactly what you are looking for.  The R2S/R2X covers take to abralon very well.  Match to what works for you, not what the Storm marketing guys decided was the best OOTB surface.

forget all that go with the gravity shift for the step down and drill it with the mass bias about 1/2 inch from your thumb hole and the pin next to your ring finger. it will be a smooth arc. yeah it is a pearlized ball however it hooks earlier than my hy road. it also allows you to play a number of boards on the lane rather than making you throw the exact same shot everytime. it is really forgiving.

the next ball to get would be the street rod solid. yeah i said it. polish it up and play it from 15 to 5-10 and it will always be a victory for you.

Britton's suggestions are on par with what I would suggest

If you're thinking the Virtual Gravity maybe too much, I'd go with the Hy-Road before I'd jump into a Second Dimension. This will give you a ball that will be a good benchmark ball for you.. Not knowing too much about your game I'd suggest the Hy-Road and then if you're looking for more motion the third ball could be a Second Dimension or if you're looking a for less, the Street Rod Solid. My arsenal layout for you would look like this in the end:

Virtual Gravity
Second Dimension
Hy-Road
Street Rod Solid Or Rapid Fire Pearl

the troad solid is just as strong a ball as the virtual..I would say a hy-road. and a sure fire for control... and a ice storm for spare and toast..

The only reason I say sure fire or street Rod is The street Rod was a lil bit jumppy for my taste.. The sure firs takes tuning and polish very well and even with polish its still smooth and controllable

do not get the rapid fire pearl, it goes way to long to recover after the first week. i am telling you do not get the rapid fire pearl for any lane condition
