If you drill the 2D pin under and add surface like you say, you may not need anything stronger than that. Conversely, if you do the same to the Hyroad, it can fill that same spot. We drilled a ton of Hyroads and they were all VERY good, no matter if it was pin high and polished or pin under and surface added.
IMO, I think you'd see more success if you drilled the HyRoad with the pin-under layout and add surface, and leave the 2D box and go pin over, with a CG swing and a decent size hole on your axis to smooth it out.
Then you have an earlier rolling, arcing ball (HyRoad), longer arcing ball (2D), an angular ball (Cell Pearl), and skid-flip ball (Rapid Fire Pearl).
