Close to Finalized
« on: February 17, 2008, 05:10:32 AM »
Well i have almost made my decision on a new 3-ball storm arsenal. Thunderstruck Pearl(light mediums/lights), Gravity Shift (mediums-heavy Mediums), Special Agent (Heavy). Again i want a fairly aggressive reaction. Any thoughts or suggestions on these choices before i order them up tomorrow? Thanks. (this does not include my Ice Storm Spare Ball).

Looks good. I suggest possibly a Spit Fire in place of the Thunderstruck Pearl, or at least get a Spit Fire sometime. Excellent ball.

So do you think the Spit Fire would be stronger on light-mediums to dry as opposed to the tunderstruck Pearl? Also ould the spit fire be a good choice for these conditions?

Spit Fire would be too strong for light-mediums to dry unless you drilled it weak and polished the heck out of it.

Also with those three balls, I think you are going to have too big of a gap between the Gravity Shift and Thuderstruck Pearl and too small of a gap between the Gravity Shift and the Special Agent.

You may want to reconsider and get...

-Secret Agent, T-Road Solid, or Special Agent for heavy oil
-Sure Fire, Rapid Fire for medium oil
-Thunderstruck Pearl for light to medium oil

so what do you suggest rather than the gravity that would fit right between the thunderstruck pearl and the special agent?

Agreed - get a Shift instead of a Gravity Shift - you will not be disappointed.

Well, my Spit Fire is actually my weakest ball (1500 polished), weaker than my Tropical. My Spit Fire has a funky drill on it, the pin close to my PAP. Even if you get the Thunderstruck Pearl, get a Spit Fire eventually.

Go with a 4 ball arsenal

Attitude Shift-heavy oil

Gravity Shift-mediumish

Rapid fire/Sure fire-True medium shot

Jolt Solid/Jolt pearl-These are better for the lighter shots that a thunderstruck or a tropical IMO

So I've been watching this particular process for the past week and I have to tell you there is no 'better' ball, just different.

Storm may be a bit more confusing these days than some of the other ball manufacturers simply because they give you different choices.

Current Storm balls that can be considered 'lighter' oil balls:

Jolt and Jolt Pearl:  Weaker cover (by today's standards) but a good rolling core.  Depending on layout this can be a good light oil or medium oil ball.

Tropical:  Strong cover - weaker core.  This is the lowest cost ball but rarely is it the best choice IMO

Thunderstruck Pearl: Same cover as the Tropical with a Thunder core.  The Thunderstruck Pearl will cover more boards than the Tropicals or Jolts - but not a ton more.  This would give you more entry angle than the other balls but it is not a skip/snap by any imagination.

Spit Fire.  Same as the Thunderstruck Pearl but even more entry angle.  This ball would have to be layed out just right to consider this a lighter oil ball.

T-Road Pearl.  This would be the strongest of the lighter oil balls.  This is a true skid/snap ball.

So, all of these could be 'lighter oil' balls, they just have different characteristics.  From an angle of entry into the pocket I would rank them:

Jolts
Tropical
Thunderstruck Pearl
Spit Fire
T-Road Pearl

For your specs. I recommended the Thunderstruck Pearl as a good control ball with a medium angle of entry.  You cant go wrong with any of these - but it really depends on how you are going to throw the ball.  IMO smoother balls carry better from outside angles and skid/snap balls like deeper angles.

The T-Road Pearl is a long way from being a lighter oil ball...

My T-Road Pearl IS my lighter oil ball.  It is layed out 5 x 3 at 4000 abralon.  Other than truely burnt lanes I am able to use my T-Road Pearl effectively on just about any lighter pattern.

Earlier someone else called the Spit Fire his lighter oil ball.  I wouldn't consider that a lighter oil ball either but for him it works.  I stand by my original descriptions that the T-Road Pearl is the strongest hooking lighter oil ball in Storm's current lineup.
