surface change

 I have a timeless I'm looking to change the surface on it. I'm not sure what to change it to. I want it to read the lane better in heavier oil. It doesn't want to hook into the pocket. Or should I try baking it first?

You could change the surface to 4000, and see if it reads enough. If that doesn't, try 2000.

If your ball isn't hooking, then it isn't slowing down properly. Surface without polish will help it slow down and read the pattern.

De-oil the ball first and then change the surface. Might as well do both maintenance items now. I second just leaving it at 2000 without polish too. There probably wouldn't be quite enough difference from the stock finish and 4000 grit. Going lower will get it closer to your desired use.

I was thinking about getting a nuball or a vertex rejuvenater which one is better or r both of them good?

I have a NuBall oven and it works great. If there is oil in the ball it's going to come out. In the case of some I've done for friends, sometimes the oil bleeds for hours...

But from what I've heard the Vertex is just as good. They're practically the same thing and it's just heat so there shouldn't be much of a difference.

For what it's worth I use an extension cord with an on/off switch for the NuBall. It starts up automatically when plugged in. No on/off switch on the unit itself, and I think the same goes for the Vertex version. From what I've heard plugging and unplugging it with it starting up automatically isn't a good thing so keep that in mind.

My electrical ignorance leads me to believe it doesn't matter if it starts when plugging it in or if when you flip a switch inline.  Perhaps the plug itself or the outlet could encounter some affects, but not sure.

There was some talk about it in one of the threads on here. I don't remember which and there has been quite a few so I really don't want to dig for it, but I think playing it safe is the best bet. For what it's worth the outlet would be what I'm worried about more than the plug and to a lesser extent the unit itself.

I agree to change the surface to a lower grit - I would probably try 2k - check with your pro shop. If you need a ball for heavier oil you might want to look at a Sure Lock.
