I would say the Code Red is probably weaker than the Defiant Soul overall. The 77H coverstock should be stronger than the R2S coverstock. The shape is probably different too, where the Code Red goes longer but is stronger off the spot. Both have/had strong asymmetrical cores so I don't think there's a big difference there.
I really liked my Defiant Soul but it wasn't one that got way down the lane and made a hard turn. That's not to say it was early, but it really fit the "hybrid" role of being between the early and late motions.
With that said at the same surface I wouldn't think there is a huge difference. I would still bet on the Defiant Soul handling more oil though. And for what it's worth just about any ball these days easily takes to surface changes. Don't put too much stock into advertising saying (or not saying) that specifically.
