Confused about the Fire Road and Crossroad
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:13:57 PM »
I'm getting conflicting reviews on the Fire Road compared to the Crossroad..

TamerBowling says " Reaction varied quite a bit depending on the bowler, but generally, the Crossroad is a bit cleaner (longer by a foot or so) with more entry angle.  The Fire Road has a stronger cover in the R2X, even though it's pearl so it adds some more traction than the Crossroad.  That doesn't mean it isn't capable of plenty of backend".

Local Storm Staffer said that the Fire Road is longer and smoother than the Crossroad.

BTM rated the Fire Road: Length 15.5, Back End 16.5, Hook 49
BTM rated the Crossroad:  Length 14, Back End 17, Hook 49

BTM ratings and local Storm Staffer co inside with each other but I also have read several reviews on this site as well as others saying the complete opposite..

I haven't seen so many conflicting comparisons of two balls like this ever..

How can TamerBowling and BTM be so different with their reviews? Anybody care to explain this??

Since surface dictates most of the ball's reaction, when two similar covers are thrown with identical cores and cover preps, they have very similar reactions. Both of these balls use the fe3 core with a 1500/polish surface prep. Also, the r2s hybrid is a very small step down from the r2x pearl, IMO. This is the main reason you are reading conflicting opinions of the balls.

Hope this helps.

Being that their both pretty similar, I'm assuming that it would be pointless having both balls in an arsenal?

I would say at the same surface, yes it would be pointless to have both in an arsenal. You could always have the fire road at oob and change the crossroad to 2000 or 4000.

Fire road is going to be sooner and smoother, whereas the cross road is longer and stronger. Both ball share a lot but thats the major difference i see from what ive seen from other bowlers. Check out buddiesproshop.com they have multiple vids on the difference in reactions. Hope that helps.

After watching the video at Buddiesproshop, I'm going to have to agree with BTM.. The Fire Road clearly looks a little longer than the Crossroad..

Glad i could somewhat help Logan, lol! From looking at the vid, it contradicts what all the storm staffers and throwers told me. Oh well, I'll admit when I'm confused. Glad it worked out for you though.

I have them both drilled the same, and both at the same out of box finish, and the FireRoad changes direction harder, but rolls, compared to the CrossRoad that has more of a hard arch with continuation. Pin over ring, cg on grip line, no hole(5"pin x 5.5" cg). The more oil up front, the more the FireRoad wants to change direction. The less oil, the quicker it slows down and smooths out. I will be posting my full review sometime next week.

I have them both, drilled almost the same (pin above and to the right of the ring finger) and think the Fire Road turns a little later and harder. But not really enough difference to warrant having them both. Personally, I like the Hyroad better than either of them! But that's just me!

I have actually considered getting rid of the Crossroad, since they are so close.

I have both of them...and they are my only 2 "league" balls.  I will agree more with tommygn on the motion.  My Crossroad is definitely a little cleaner through the fronts and a big hard arc downlane, whereas my Fire Road picks up the lane quicker and makes a much quicker transition.  For me there is a definite difference in the two balls overall.  I think they compliment each other well, not necessarily that different, but very different paths to the pocket.
