Looking for advice -- Please.
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:30:52 AM »
So, Long time reader, first time poster.

Ok i am a league/tournament bowler. 20+ years of exp. However, only over the last 3 years have became more active and intense. I bowl 3 leagues weekly and a tourney at least once a month. So my specs...

202 avg. over 3 leagues
400+ revs
16-18 mph
high track (occasionally in between fingers and thumb through middle of span.)
Loads of side revs.
Big swinger (10left of center to 11 to 8 of right gutter)

My home house is 40ft. at 28units.

So I have been obsessing over the nano pearl since before its release. However, As i have been paying attention to the forums I am starting to believe that this ball may not be a improvement over my current ball. I have a Anarchy(pin drilled out), I don't see use it for any thing more than a backup ball(10pin issues). I use a Storm Tropical Heat Hybrid(V1).
The Heat Hybrid has served me well over the last 3 years. I just want more ball to open the lanes with. After a few weeks of consideration its the Nano pearl that keeps drawing my attention. I really want a nano hybrid; but that appears to be a pipe dream.
My Local pros are suggesting the DV8 Hybrid but as I am a loyal Storm I need suggestions. I prefer to stay symmetrical, as asymmetrical is too skid flippy for me. Please help.

Thanks, from Sonora CA.

For starters Storm covers (Storm & Roto-Grip) respond to friction stronger (a more visual change of direction) than Brunswick or EBI covers...thus if you like the motion you see with Storm stick with their line.
The Nano pearl is not as strong overall as the Anarchy as well as not as versatile.
Opening up the lane is as much as dependent upon the bowlers attributes as the bowling ball or equipment. The Heat hybrid has a fairly strong cover so going to s stronger bowling ball tends increasing reaction as much as front to back than side to side.
If you are tracking between the fingers & thumb, this is considered a full roller and if your rev rate is as high as you say, you are more than likely over rotating trying to create revolutions...you may consider improving your release to increase your consistency and pin carry.
As far as a good Storm pearl piece, you may consider a HyRoad or the Roto Shatter

Thank you for the timely responce.

I understand that the opening of a lane is much about techniques and attributes. What i mean was that i wanted a stronger over all ball. More or less a 20% or so upgrade to the Tropical heat hybrid.

It has been suggested that I am indeed a full roller. For the most part my 4x4x2 drill on the heat has produced a fair amount of 700's and a few 800's. My over rotating is my attempt at overcompensation for the lack of ball power. I will discuss the full roller drill on my next ball at the pro shop.

I have reviewed the suggested balls and was wondering if the Crossroads would be a good alternative to the Hy-road. Reason being, The Crossroads is currently in stock at my local shop (in weight and pin length). According to storm the Hy-road is a med-heavy ball and the crossroads is a med. I am aware that their are a lot of topics regarding this. But in your opinion which would produce the desired results?

Thank you for the knowledge and advice.

The Crossroads will be stronger front to back than the HyRoad..another GREAT option is the Marvel pearl...very underrated bowling ball.
Good that you understand your 'flaws'...with today's equipment I would work less on power and more on consistency than power! Good luck

It's good that you know what you want to work on with the release, so kudos to you on that.  That being said, I would say look at the Hy-Road or Crossroad as has been mentioned.  I'd even look at the Roto Grip Berserk.  All 3 of these would easily work with your speed/rev rate and give you a nice option below the Anarchy.

If you go with the Berserk, you may need to change the surface (comes 4000 OOB) to match up, but that Caliber Core is damn good with the carry in it's sister balls (Outlaw and Bandit).  If you were to go that route, you may need to hit it with polish to make it go a little longer depending on what you prefer.

If you are looking for something slightly stronger than either of these, I also agree with JustRico with the Marvel Pearl.  This ball is very underrated but it has become popular with people having higher rev rates.  The Marvel Pearl has a good cover/core combo and offers good motion and overall control downlane.  This can help you especially with tournament patterns.
