Cracking Issues with Storm Covers
« on: July 10, 2007, 06:33:22 AM »
I have been throwing nothing but Ebonite and Hammer for awhile now but its time for a change. I've been contemplating going with Storm or Big B stuff. Yesterday I was talking with some established bowlers in my area and they were telling me to stay away from Storm because of their low quality covers. Apparently Storm balls crack alot easier than the others. Now I don't know how much truth there is to this but I figured I would atleast ask this question here on the Storm forum to see what you guys/gals say abouth this.

My Agent with very low games cracked big time.  Storm did replace it with a new one and I am still contemplating whether to drill it or just sell it.  Before it cracked, the ball was an absolute beast.

the only strom ball that ever cracked on me was my shift but i drilled a little too close to the pin, it's actually cracking in the bridge so it's not a cover problem as it's inside the hole pretty deep. havent heard of any issues with storm thus far

I haven't had any of their current ones crack and I pretty much put them through hell.

I've used storm products for a long time whether it be storm, Dyno-thane, now with Roto-grip and I have never had a Storm ball crack. I do take very good care of my stuff like clening it and not leaving it in the car. Thats a big problem here in AZ it hot here, But like I said don't be scared personally never had a problem.

One BIG mistake I used to make and I know others do make is to leave your finger holes too sharp. MAKE SURE YOU BEVEL THEM - I just put the balls on a spinner and use a piece of sandpaper for a few seconds - and you should not have cracking problems.

I just just a 1/8 bridge and cracking once was common for me ... until Schlem told me to quit being an idiot and bevel the fingers - I thought it was the other way and left them real sharp, DUH!

Since I started beveling a decent amount I have drilled about 10 new Storms and not suffered one crack.

The problems that I have heard of dealt mostly with the EOX cover which is on the paradigm and the passion.  I haven't experienced or heard about any issues with the R2S or the Reactor.  Moreover the problems with the EOX were supposed to have been resolved.

They were.  Also if you had one of those you could send it back and they would replace it.

I have owned 40+ different Storm balls and have never had any cracks or other problems. As someone else mentioned make sure the holes are beveled properly and  don't leave the balls in the car or garage in extremely hot or cold weather.

The Passions and the first Paradigm cracked very easy, I don't beleive cracking issues are Storms Problem it is the fact that their covers just don't have the same reaction after 20 games the perfermance and carry drop off quite a bit and with the loss of perfermance cause loss of carry.

I am not sure how many hundreds of games my Thunderstruck has on it, but I definitely haven't seen a loss in performance or decrease in carry.  In fact, I still get all my highest scores with it.

Of course, I clean my stuff after every set before it goes in the bag and I do regular resurfacing and oil extraction.  Definitely not regular as in 20 games.  I probably put 20 games on one ball a week.

Every company will have cracking problems now and then.  No matter what company you favor or what company you are interested in, save for the tales of woe that local bowlers tell, you'll find some people who have had cracking problems and many that haven't.

Were there some balls in particular that had cracking issues?  Sure.  The Paradigm and Passion, I remember reading about the EPX-T1 as well.  Happens to every company from time to time.
