depth charge drill opinion
« on: December 15, 2004, 12:55:01 PM »
had a ebonite trimax III resin ball that I got from dominator a few years back with a drilling like this that I loved (ball cracked bad last year):

pin below ring about 3/4 inches, then cg (pin 3.5 inches)was down towards thumb and kicked out about 1 inch off of midline.  wt hole way down in thumb quadrant.  super reaction, strong predictable arc.

is this a drill that should also work on the depth?  got one with a 4 inch pin, and looking to replicate the trimax, granted it was reactive.  thanks

Mine has a 2 1/4" PIN. That is very-very close to how I have mine drilled. It gets thru the heads easily, has good length, and hooks very-very strong on the back end. At times almost a snap if you have dry back ends.

dstanek,

Drillings will not help you make one ball emulate another, when the base specifications of one, the Depth Charge, are so dissimilar to the second, the Matrix III.

Here's Ebonite's spec page for the Matrix:
http://www.ebonite.com/products/product_page.php?PRKey=69&Submit=Go

The Depth Charge not only has a significantly lower RG, around 2.45, comapred to the Matrix's 2.55, it also has a significantly stronger cover, a 3% particle load, pearlized cover, compared to the regular pearl resin cover of the Matrix. Plus the cover of the Matrix is realtively mild by today's standard's.

The Ebonite Showtime pearl might be a better starting point to emulate the Matrix III. (Possibly, one of the Element series might be a direct replacement.) The Depth Charge will handle heavier oil and hook a lot more; it may hook too early on lighter oil that the Matrix was able to handle.

My Depth charge I just got is drilled 3 3/8 x 5 with weight hole on PAP, ball is clean up front, revs up in the mid and make a fairly strong backend move. I have been playing up the boards with speed and it gets through the front very nice and still gets to the pocket with tons of power. Carry for me has been excellent so far. Ball has a 3 1/2" pin and about 3.2 top weight to start.

Oh, there is little doubt, the Depth Charge is an excellent ball. I've seen and heard too many people far and wide have great success with it. It's just that it is not a replacement for a Matrix III; it is 1 to possibly 2 steps stronger in oil handling ability, plus earlier in its hook/roll cycle.
