Details on the Lucid
« on: August 30, 2012, 08:08:08 AM »
Saw some literature on the Lucid, and have to say I think this is a step in the right direction for high end balls.

It's not simply a pearl Vivid.  The Vivid had the NRG cover (same as VG Nano), which the Nano Pearl was Pearl NRG.  The Lucid will be pearl, but WITHOUT the Nano portion of the NRG, it will be called ERG.

One of the complaints about the Nano was that it bled a little bit too much in the midlane and really had a tough time continuing downlane.  I think the loss of some surface on the Lucid will be great.

Over time I have noticed that high end cores with milder pearl covers tend to do much better on the market than stronger pearls.  I think the Lucid may be a great combination for the 1/2 high end punch.

So would you say that this is similar to a Victory Road but more downlane; like a VR on roids per se?

That would be my guess.  Much bigger engine and a nice clean pearl cover.  It may be a touch smoother off of the spot because the cover is probably a touch stronger than R2S Pearl, just not as much as NRG Pearl.

I'm assuming all things being equal, meaning polish.  The Lucid will come OOB at 4k abralon, so with that finish it will definitely be a little more midlane.  I personally will probably hit mine with Storm 3 before ever throwing it.

Russell,

I know you're not saying this, but your first 2 paragraphs could be interpreted to read that they decided to remove the particles from the basic Nano coverstock. (I'm not saying the Nano has particles, but ....)

I also loved the fact that in the video in the original Lucid thread here on ballreviews, they compared the Lucid to a Vivid Pearl which must be marketed in another market zone outside the US. The difference in continuation is quite easy to see, with the Pearl Vivid almost standing up in an end-over-end roll.

Regarding the strength of pearls, I would agree with you, IF the pearl was being designed for and marketed as a step down from some solid. However if the pearl is designed to be an oiler or to be a stand-alone ball, then strength can be a primary requisite. Examples of such balls are the Critical Theory, the Blue/Silver Taboo, & the new Deep Purple Taboo.

Saw some literature on the Lucid, and have to say I think this is a step in the right direction for high end balls.

You're right charles...truth is I'm not that sure about what to expect.  Based on the box finish you'd think they were trying to make it more of an oiler ala the B/S Taboo or Critical Theory, however in talking to someone in the know yesterday I think the cover is supposed to be a good bit cleaner through the fronts than the Nano Pearl.  My favorite higher end pearls over the years were balls where they stuck mild covers on big, strong cores (X Factor, XXX Factor, Pearl Black Widow, Paradigm Domination).  I feel that the stronger pearls on those big engines tend to do as you see in the video posted and hook/roll too quick.

In re-reading I also see that I said the "Nano lacked continuation"...well duh....it's a hook monster...I meant the Nano PEARL...lol...oops.

I saw it described as Storm's answer to the Critical Theory.

I'm thinking about going with a Lucid or a Deep Purple. Not sure what to get but I know that my Jigsaw Corner needs to go.. Maybe I could just put some shine on it.. Hmm.

I know it is kind of silly, but I think the Lucid is the best Smelling ball Storm has put out.  It is almost addicting. :D

My friend (a Storm staffer) was with Storm yesterday shooting some video on the ball. He was amazed how hard the ball turned, and said he had some difficulty keeping it off the nose.

He brought the two test balls back to the shop, and seemed pretty excited about the release.  It will probably be a very popular choice for the masses who want the BIG turn.  For the life of me I cannot remember the aroma (as if it matters).
