I'm feeling quite "Thunderstruck" tonight (1st 300 game)
« on: February 26, 2007, 02:02:40 PM »
I finally got my first sanctioned 300 game tonight with a Thunderstruck Solid.  This was the first set I bowled with it after asking the pro shop operator to modify the surface a little bit to make it more controllable for me.   I think it worked out pretty well.

Whenever I throw 6 or 7 in a row I totally choke.  It's totally rad!

Could you let us know what you did to the surface?  I am torn between the Special Agent and the Thunderstruck Solid, been leaning towards the solid with a surface adjustment, but have not pulled the trigger yet.  You can find bowlers that love both, but I don't need both, just need one solid covered ball with a little surface....to finish my arsenal...Great shooting....I have a ton of great scores, but the Sanctioned 300 eludes me.....

Congratulations CHawk!

The Thunderstruck is a great ball for surface modifications, it seems to respond really well. They recently modified the house pattern at my centre putting more oil in the track. While a lot of players were caught out, scuffing the surface to 2000 on my Thunderstruck gave me a great look.

For anybody looking for a really versatile solid, the Thunderstruck is it. Really shiny this ball can make a hard turn on the backend like a pearl ball, the more you dull it the more it rolls and controls. For me it takes the heads to get really dry before its hooking too early.

If you need more help getting the ball to rev up then the Special Agent might be the ball for you. Both are excellent balls depending on your needs.

As I mentioned before, this ball was way too skid/flippy for me in the OOB finish because my game is a little speed dominant.  Couple that with flying backends and you have a recipe for disaster.  I usually go with smoother rolling drills (which both my pro shop operator and I thought this was) because I prefer balls with a strong continuation vs a skid/snap look.  But this ball definitely had the skid/snap look especially once I broke the ball in a little bit.

So I decided to try the surface adjustment first rather than plug and redrill it.   It was taken down to either 500 or 360 grit abralon and then polished up w/ Track Magic Shine. He also used the Track Power Wash to clean the oil out of the ball, which I believe was part of the equation as well.   This combination gave me the control I like in the midlane but make no mistake, this ball still finishes very hard, but was more like a very strong continuation rather than a snap.  This ball hits very hard and pins usually go flying everywhere.  It's a beautiful thing to see.

I am wondering why Storm hasn't put a video of this ball on their site.  This ball is a solid performer.
