oil shortage
« on: September 18, 2008, 01:16:08 PM »
Does it seem like there is less oil being used this year ? Both houses that I bowl in seem to have a little more hook this year. Wondering if there is a conection to the higher price of oil.

Lol my house has absolutely no oil at all on our lanes. I'm a stroker with maybe a 25 degree axis tilt, throwing about 35 out to 2 snapping back in to go brooklyn. Since I live in Canada 5 pin mostly dominates all 10-pin, and the staffers at my house don't give a $h!t about 10 pin. Seriously we'll actually bowl and then oil the lanes after we burnt out the already burnt out lanes! IT PISSES ME OFF!

I know its a stretch but I imagine the profit margin on a bowling center is probrably pretty low. So, I would think that if the price of oil goes up dramatically so would the price of lane conditioners. If you ran a center and needed to cut back on expenses what would you cut first?

I don't know about where you guys are but our centers seem slicker this year than in the past couple of years. I have actually been able to use some of my higher surface friction equipment this year and I have had no need for it outside of tourneys in the past.

Last summer my home house flat out did not oil at all unless for leagues. The only side of the center you could get to practice on wasn't oiled for a week. One lane I could play up 15 with a beast, and the other lane I was playing 6th arrow with my white dot!

Came back the next day, same pair of lanes.....SAME EXACT REACTIONS! It was crazy. Fun to practice with plastic though, ha.

it might be since league bowling is decreasing, they put out an easier shot which usually consists of less oil to start and strong backends.

it could also be that since AMF wants to maximize open bowling, they put out less oil for them cuz they all just shoot the ball straigh down the lane and dont play patterns.

just two possibilities

Lane Oil is from mineral oil.  Which is a byproduct of refining gasoline.  So there's plenty of it.  The cost is in the engineering and chemists.  Each batch must be consistent, carry down a little bit, not carry down too much, hold up to the bowler's new oil-soaking high-flaring ball, and be easily cleaned.  And then there's the vast variety of different lane machines that all need certain formulas and viscosities.  They have to constantly test and research this.  That's what the center is paying for.
