I'm drilling a Nano for Nationals team event but would like to use the ball after as well.
Drill pin under or over?
PAP is about 4 7/8 and 5/8 up rev rate about 300 and speed is about 16.5 mph.
I was thinking 4 X 4 with a 2 inch buffer.
Thanks,

I have to be honest I don't think the Nano is a good ball choice this year, unless you go with a weak pin and some polish. The pattern has a lot of taper at the end, and strong balls tend to have a hard time storing any energy. I threw a Taboo and Pure Physics in practice and had very little downlane reaction, right before the lights came on I tried my Hyroad (5" 45* pin down 4000 abralon) and it looked amazing. If I was remotely sharp I had a 2050+ look with that ball.
Everyone in our group found the same thing during the first game and had to downshift balls.

I concur with the above, I had a Nano with a 5 inch pin, pin over bridge and had 230+ in the first game of team. Then thats when the ball starting bogging down, leaving 2-7s and shaker 7s. Strong balls just arent the ticket this yr. Pin down symetrical balls look the best to me.

My pro shop guy drilled one to take out and enede up not using it as it was burning up. He also drilled an Anarchy and used that a lot and loves the reaction. Anarchy was drilled pin down.

I just drilled a nano pin up. Not drilled specifically for what I think Reno will be like, but I will give it a look up there. Out of box mine does burn off energy pretty quick on a house shot, but I think it will be better on longer flatter patterns. It is really about your style whether you can use it in Reno. Lower rev rates ( less than 325 ) with decent ball speed and low axis rotation ( 20-30 degrees ) might match up well for a Nano in nationals.
What you may find is that a shnier ball that will let you play straighter in team will work, and the Nano might be better in dbles and singles if you can chase the oil inside.
Biggest mistake people make on long patterns is trying to use too aggressive a shell to open the shot up early.

I agree with Russell and northface. Nano's, Alpha Max's and other strong balls in my group did not work well. I was the exception on throwing something stronger but meet avabob's criteria - low axis rotation and higher ball speed. In fact I increased my ball speed in Reno so I could play pretty straight. I had good success throwing a pin over bridge, 5" pin to pap Vital Sign in team(after game 1) and singles. A pin down Special Agent and pin down Shift looked good for me in doubles.
Overall, pin down symmetrical stuff looked good and a one of our guys had an excellent reaction with a pin down Virtual Energy, he just wasn't sharp enough to hit the shot this year.

I took out a Nano pin up and it was very over/under in box condition on the fresh. I went ahead and took a lesson with Mike Jasnau and he watched about 3 shots and hit it with 2000 abralon by hand lightly. When he was taping my shots for the CATS data, I ripped off a five-bagger.
Jas's recommendation was to use a 2000 grit - pin under - Marvel for the fresh somewhere around 7-8 at the arrows and shim inwards as the set goes on. He said there is a lot of volume up front, but the drop-brush (reverse oiling) starts at a closer distance to the front of the pattern vs the back thus making the back ends very sharp.
Of course I have a Marvel drilled to his specs that I left home thinking it might be overlap with the Nano. :$@#$!!

Hello Barry
Here is what I would recommend:
Nano - 55 * 4 3/4 * 2 1/8 Buffer
Eagle - 55 * 4 13/16 * 2 1/8 Buffer
The Eagle will push about 2 feet farther then the Nano do to the coverstocks.
Good Luck and welcome back.

Chris,
Im looking at drilling an Eagle or a Nano for nationals also.
PAP 5 1/8 and 1 up 325-350 revs 16-17mph
What would you suggest for each in dual angle?
