Gravity shift help
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:15:25 AM »
I bought a gravity on the 5th and threw it on the 6th. I thought this ball would be similar to maybe a total nv in strength. I have found that I cannot throw this ball it has a backend reaction that I have never in my life seen. It was supposed to have midlane even thought its a pearl and not be quite so jumpy. When it hits dry boards it almost looks like it comes to a stop then jumps across the lane. People that saw it last night were in awe like myself. It looks cool but I cannot control it at all. Any suggestions. I average from 215 to 230 between the different leagues I am in so I would say I am an accurate and consitent shot maker. Average deuce on a sport shot. What can I do to tame this thing down. I was cranking my levrg last night and could only get 12 boards out of it. There was a ton of carry down and the shot was slick. My nsane wouldnt move at all but the levrg did good great control. The storm was moving around 25 boards even on this shot and with no control whatsoever. Please help.

Rolled it on a fresher shot and for four games averaged 244 with it. Funny thing didnt feel like I really rolled it that good either. Got lucky and tripped alot of stuff out. I dont try to rev this ball because it goes crazy if I do I was standing on 5 board on the right hand side I am a lefty. Swung it over middle arrow out to about 5 board it would come screaming back without even hitting it. Super strong ball. With a fresher shot maybe its possible to use. Maybe.

It will slow down once it gets a little bit of a track on it and/or it gets some oilsoak in the cover. My Gravity and Attitude were real jumpy off the spot until they got some oil in the cover. Now they are great compliments to one another.

If it is really jumpy, you could have your driller plug and redrill it with the pin under and the pin closer to 5 1/2 from PAP. The pin under will slow down the response to the friction and the longer Pin-to-PAP will cut back on the track flare.

The motor in the Shift series is really strong and combine that with an updated version of the R2S coverstock (R2X), makes for a ball that has a strong cover/strong motor. On these balls, you might err on the cautious side with pin-to-pap distances closer to 5-6" range. You may even want some key placements in the 15*-45* range. This will help the ball bleed off some energy and roll up vs snap up on the back ends. My Attitude is 5" x 30* x 35* (pin up) and my Gravity is 4.5" x 55* x 65* (pin under). Even though the key on the Gravity is in a stronger position, the pin under keeps the reaction off the friction rollier vs snappier.

I think it will be a great ball on the right condition. Last night it was a fresh shot with clean backends and that seemed to help me control it better. As long as I dont turn it much I am fine  I definetely cant crank on it or it doesnt have a chance. The power this ball puts at the pins is ridiculous.

I just posted a review of this ball under the Gravity Shift reviews thread.  This ball is awesome with great length, back end, and hitting power that has to be seen to be believed.  IMO, this is the most impressive Storm ball I have used.  The Gravity Shift is great for typical house patterns and will become a favorite of Storm fans and league bowlers everywhere.  This ball seems to find the pocket, even if you miss a few boards.  Pin carry is great from both outside and inside lines.

As noted in my post under the ball reviews section, I don't know the specifics of my layout but according to my driller it is very similar to layout 1 which can be found under drill specs on Storm's website.  The finger holes are drilled just below and to the left of the pin and the thumb hole is drilled where the key symbol is on the ball.  As noted by Storm, this enhances the ball reaction.  Pin to pap is 4 3/4" with mass bias 5" from PAP.  The placement allows for length with back end.  The ball does have some leverage weight and an extra hole.  I am a down and in track player usually between 8 and 12 which is typical of normal house or league conditions.  For my style of play, layout 1 has always worked best with all of my Storm equipment. The Gravity shift is smooth down the lane and continuous off of the break point. Long and strong, nothing hits like a Storm!
