Storm balls and the Scorpion pattern
« on: July 07, 2007, 01:08:48 AM »
Ok I know that this is more of a topic for antother forum because I am talking more about the pattern...

Ok so I bowled on the scorpion last night for the seacond time on my PBA league and the backends of this pattern flew like crazy I ended up using my Thunderstruck pearl throwing about 15 to 8 and no matter how I would hit the pocket I just could not carry at all NOBODY on my pair could carry it was just a really frustrating night....So has anyone else had this problem on the scorpion??? and what balls are you guys using on this one?

when i want to slow down my ball speed and over all speed i stand at the first set of dots on the approach i use a 4 step approach and hold my ball low during and before pushoff. if i want to speed up i go 5 step approach with or without higher ball position.

I liked coach7500 comments.

I remember once on a flooded sloppy leftover pattern in the afternoon I couldn't hook at all.

Told my proshop I needed one of them new fangled particle balls.

He told me it wasn't I COULDN'T it was that I WOULDN'T.

He reminded me to do just what coach said.  Move up, lower the ball, look at dots instead of arrows and throw soft instead of hard and I threw after a few warmup tosses 19 in a row!  Practice of course!  Same ball.

IT works...Those dots just over the arrow can really get a ball to start earlier on a sloppy pattern.  Just like the 42 foot stripes on anvilanes can really delay break point on bone dry synthetics!

Cool!

Bump

The last 2 weeks was Scorpion and I must say it's the first time I've matched up well to a PBA pattern straight from the get go. Both weeks the lanes were almost identical which is very surprising considering the previous 5 were completely different every time. But I think I'm finally getting the hang of this PBA stuff, which is exciting. Next week is the Shark...super long, kinda scary. Anybody been here and if so, how did it compare to the rest of these patterns?

I just got my first chance to bowl on the Shark last night (we've got it for the next 3 weeks in our PBA league) in practice.  It was late in the day and the heads had already started to break down and the backends were tight.  But even with the broken down heads, I absolutely, completely, totally did not match up with the Shark at all.  I'm convinced this pattern was designed specifically to annoy speed-dominant lower rev players like myself.  And it really hates people with higher ball speeds, which is not good for me because I quite simply cannot throw the ball slow anymore.  I have no accuracy when I try to go slower than 17mph.

I had my ball driller help coach me a little (something I rarely do because I can generally tell when I'm doing something wrong) and he noticed I was overturning the ball trying to force the ball to hook.  Once I started rolling the ball better, I was hitting my mark much more consistently and getting more forward roll and more revs.  That being said, I was still completely, totally lost.  The best look we found for me was rolling the Special Agent straight up the 9 or 10 board area.  If I went just one board left, it was going to go face.  If I got it out just one board right, I completely missed the head pin to the right.  And carry was pretty horrible since the backends were tight.  All I could do was let the ball hook early and hope it hit near the pocket to leave an easy spare.  I bowled four games and the highest I shot was a 167.  I was absolutely LOST on the Shark.  All of the other PBA patterns I could at least pull a 190-200 game out of a set somewhere no matter what...

I played it for the first time last night on wood lanes.  I went 180-257-188.  I used my shift in the beginning, standing at 25 going between 2nd and 3rd arrow to the 6 board.  I was in the pocket but left ringing corner or a 6 pin.  I think I left a 10 pin on a light hit too.  Then it broke down and I used my X-factor for game 2 standing 20 and hitting between 5-8 board.  I had a little room.  I had an eight bagger before leaving another corner pin.  I keep the same line and I left corners the rest of the third game, and I got soft on two shots and left the 2-4-7-8 twice.  On my fill ball, I moved in five boards in with my feet and one on the lane and I struck.  I have a feeling I was moving the wrong way when the lanes transitioned.

Anyway, that's my story and I guess I would say the best ball depends on the lane surface, and in my case it was the x-factor with the pin over the fingers and that other stuff inline.

Not in my house it doesn't.  I was getting about 3 boards less hook on the Shark than on the Scorpion.  (Which, at that point, meant darn near straight instead of just pretty straight)

And unlike the wood lanes r534me was facing, there's not much friction outside of 10 in my house.  If I tried to hit the 6 board at my breakpoint, I would barely touch the 3 pin.

There are only a couple of other leftys in our league and one was playing the lanes straight up while the other was playing a little deeper with some surface.  So my experience might not be the norm.  Jonathan Ng is in the same league so you can get a perspective from him from his thread in misc.

As for the dude who posted about being speed-dominant and lower revs...I'm sort of in the same boat, being a speed-oriented and lower rev player. I don't quite throw that hard, but I do lack in the revs department. But after hearing that, I'm quite scared to bowl on Shark, lol. Hopefully with some homework I can figure something out.

n00d, imo, the pba patterns are for us to experiment with, and enjoy.  We do the best we can, and if it defeats us one day, we'll try again.

So keeping that in mind, do the best you can with your current equipment, and if it's not hooking, try a different hand position, lower the ball in your stance or shorten the approach to cut down on your ball speed.

Bowling, for me, is always changing, and there is always something new to learn.

That is so true r534...the PBA patterns are fun to say the least. I know I get PO'd from time to time, but it's a great learning experience. This coupled with the regular THS I have at this other house which is probably tougher to figure out than the PBA ones, I'm getting some great practice in. Hopefully it'll pay off come tournament season this fall/winter. I wanna get some good experience in the tournament ring. Woo practice!

Yeah, have a good time, and learn what you can so when you do see something like that you can think "I've seen this before, this is what I will do".  At least, that's what I tell myself!

Well, my first look on the Shark was intense. Me with my low revs had a horrendous look playing inside, so I decided to pretend my name was Norm Duke and angle it in from the right corner. And it worked like a charm. Ended up bowling a 580 with my least amount of opens yet on a PBA condition, 5 for 3 games. I had 15 strikes, and I averaged one split per game. My hardest adjustment was knowing what to do once my line broke down...by the middle/end of the second game, my Passion was picking up too early and I tried to kind of square up my line by moving my target. That worked a bit, but I wasn't sure it was the best move. So I tried my original line with my Pyro, and the lanes weren't quite broken down enough for that ball to be very effective. So next week I'm gonna try to keep my eyes the same, and try moving my feet left and see how that works. Either way, my team won 5 and we've creeped into either 2nd or 3rd place, woo!

Hey since we are talking about the Shark, I have to say the Special Agent is very fun to use on it.  I have been doing it at 1000 grit.  I also seem to get less opens on this pattern which is fun.
