What are the rules about scuffing different flare lines.

Are they the same everywhere....ie can one just hit early flare lines...late flare lines... At league...on the pro tour???

What are the rules.

I keep seeing this monster Diablo killin em ....and not many people own!!

PBA players can scuff/alter certain sides of the ball.  

USBC does NOT allow players during sanctioned competion to alter just certain sides of the ball....the ball must be uniform on all sides.  A player can alter the surface/scuff during practice as long as the ball is scuffed all the way around.  Once competition starts you may not scuff/alter the surface.

USBC does check equipment at tourney's like the upcoming Masters.

As far as I know, the whole surface of a ball has to be sanded the same way, same grit. Just hitting the track area is not allowed... BUT! The way you sand the ball can have a little additional effect on the ball. When you place the ball in a spinner for sanding, you can have it rotate on the proper axis so that the ball, as it flares, gets into the same axis of rotation as the sanding process. This IS allowed and gives some extra traction/can be used to tweak ball reaction.

So really the pros have an advantage for conquering tough conditions...but their conditions are tougher!

So I wonder if most amateurs when they go in to pro competition know all these competitive tricks. Especially the 230 guys who shoot 175 and the pros make examples of them.

So when I go into league I cannot gently scuff early flare rings...late flare rings...etc before league starts???

I meant early/late flare rings considering the way of the ball down the lane.

I think when you are to play on a flat 3:1 or 4:1 oil pattern, anything will help. For "normal" players on a easier oil pattern, those things are negligible, but it is good to know some tricks

USBC Rules.

"Surface:

The surface of the ball shall be free of all depressions or grooves of specific pattern, except for holes or indentations used for gripping the ball, identification lettering and numbers, and incidental chipping or marking caused by wear.

 

Engraved pictures are not considered grooves of specific pattern.  

 

No foreign material may be placed on the outer surface of the ball.  

 

If the surface friction of the ball is altered by sanding or polishing, the entire surface of the ball must be sanded or polished.

 

Plugs and grips may not extend beyond the surface of the ball."

It is very popular on the PBA to hit the back flares to promote hook in the back-end, especially on carrydown.

This is the reason why the Helix and Double Helix are great balls for wierd shots.  Even with the same uniform surface the urethane rolls differently than the rest of the ball.  Its like having your initial track polished and the rest of the ball scuffed.

Brad....?says you would be lucky to average 170 on their conditions.
