2nd dimension question?
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:03:55 PM »
is the 2nd dimension a good benchmark ball? when it first came out i knew everyone was hella hyped about it but now since the VG and VE came out, seems it lost its hype.  looking for something i can pull out when i first get to a bowling center that wont flip like crazy but still have some backends. was thinking about drilling a 2d with the pin under my middle finger and kicking the cg out but not too far. would this be a good benchmark ball? if not, what do you guys suggest that would be better?

btw, i tried a hy-road before and just dont do well with hybrid coverstocks. only hybrid that i had success with was the rogue cell. not too brand specific so tell me what you guys think and use! thanks!

woops forgot some stats. i throw it at about 300 rpm and around 15-16mph comfortably. i can throw it slower with a higher rev rate as well as faster with a bit of hand in it still when i really wanna bank it off the spot. i think the highest i can go consistantly is 18-19mph, but as mentioned, my comfort zone is around 15-16. i throw the ball normally in the track area or more up the boards but can play the deep inside line if the condition permits it.

If I get to a house I've never bowled in, I usually go straight for my t-road solid.  I have it drilled 5 1/2 inch pin down so it's mega even and lays off pretty well.  You can find them pretty cheap still on bowlingball.com (71.99).  I wouldn't suggest drilling it strong if you get one because I have a 4" pin up one and it hooks like a monster.

If you want something else, try the freeze.  It's a lot stronger than most people say, it's definitely not for dry conditions.

Either one would be a good benchmark ball.  good luck!

Reactive pearls don't typically make good "benchmark" balls.  A better option would be the original Dimension.  The solid cover would provide a overall stronger reaction but more even allowing you to keep the ball in play and see what the condition is giving you.

I score better with my 2D than any other ball in my bag but it's not the first ball out of my bag. I bowl 2nd shift and I like to use it as the lanes break down. Usually my second or third game. The ball rev's like mad and jumps off the spot. Don't get me wrong, the 2D is a very good ball, but it's more condition specific.

I agree with agroves that the original Dimension would make a better "benchmark" ball.

Rapid Fire Solid is also a good choice if you can still find one.  Nomad solid is probably closest to it with the current Storm/Roto stuff.

Take a look at that layout and tell me if that's the kind of what you want to do layout wise. This is my second 2D and the layout works well for me deciding if I need more or less in my hand. The layout on this ball blends the dry out for me so it gets a lot of work.

this is very similar to how i wanted mine, although i didnt want to kick the cg out that far. was thinking a little closer to the center grip.

for some reason, i dont do as well with solids than i do with pearls. a coach told me that i need to throw something with a weaker layout to tame it but still  have backends. ive tried many different balls/companies, just cant seem to get a solid ball down the lane. Powerswing would roll out on me, VG roll out until i fixed the cover a tad, resurgence roll out, and so forth.

i currently use either a VG with 500grit followed by a 4000grit cover, or a black widow pearl drilled close to stacked and the surface is a little dull for oily lanes

emerald vibe with polish and a rayzr for dryer lanes. looking for something between that and thought of the 2D.

I use mine as a benchmark. pin over and cg right of grip @ 1000 abralon. When polished it should only be used on medium to dry but when the surface is taken down it can cover a wide range of conditions.

i recently punched one of these babies up and i use mine as my bench mark ball threw the rico drill on it but i didnt do it for any other reason other then the fact that this layout just rolls super even for me which lets me kno what reaction i have to jump to if i dont use this ball

for me this layout is 5 inches from pap and i took the side weight down to 1/2 oz if any of this info is helpful to anyone at all
also took this surface to 1000 light coat of polish just to get a slight sheen

2ND DIMENSION UPDATE!!!

so after talking about it, i finally went out and got one drilled with the pin under my middle finger and cg kicked out about 45*. threw it for 3 or 4 shots to get out of it ok and then started my first game. first game out the box i go 299! my highest game yet! although it wasn't sanctioned, my heart was still beating at a million miles a second. great ball! tried out some of my other stuff after. great addition to my arsenal. very clean through the front and controllable in the backend. my new benchmark ball. (:
