Help with Optimus pearl
« on: December 24, 2015, 10:49:43 AM »
When I picked bowling back up last year the 1st new ball I picked up was an Optimus.

I bowled pretty decent with it but I can't say I've ever really loved the reaction I get with it. One of the main issues I have is that I'll throw what I feel is a pretty decent shot and I just get little to no reaction; like the ball never enters its hook phase till its way too late. Then sometimes when I slow my speed down, it'll find some random friction spot and jump left way earlier than I planned. (I'm guessing this is what you call over/under). What type of surface adjustments could I make to smooth the reaction out and make it read the lanes a touch earlier?

The ball def hits like a truck and I'd love to feel confident in it when my IQ Nano starts leaving 10 pins.

Thanks.

Mine was like that too, I sold it.  For confidence I'd go with a original hyroad, rolls 10x better. You'll feel like a stud.
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid

Have you changed the surface? Factory polished Storm balls react in the way you describe for me, too. Take the factory shine off and have it repolished, this may be what you're looking for.

What you are describing is what I see from pearl surfaced bowling balls. Because most (not all) have slip agents in the surface versus solids that do not, the ball gets better length than a solid even if you put the surface of a solid and a pearl of the same ball at the same surface (think sanding down an original Optimus versus the Optimus solid). The pearl cover and slip agents for me causes the ball to slide on any amount of oil, but once it sniffs dry, flips and turns to the point it is almost overreaction, thus what I consider an over-under reaction.

I have the Optimus solid and love the reaction. Everyone is different but you might as well.

Don't be afraid to try different surfaces on the ball.  From what you say, the 1500 + polish is a little too slick.  I would first sand it at 1500 with no polish.  If that doesn't work, I would go with 500 + polish.  Experiment with different surfaces in practice and see which one you like the best.

The Optimus was one of the worst balls I've ever used, kind of just tumbled and did nothing or hooked stupid early. I will say i had the most success when I kept it at 2000, but I had other balls that filled that need and performed better.

From my personal experience and what I've heard from many other bowlers, everybody found the Optimus to be way to over/under on any condition. If selling the ball is not an option, I would experiment with different surfaces. I would suggest trying 500/2000 or if that doesn't work maybe 360/4000 (it's what worked best for my friends Optimus). Would highly suggest selling the ball if none of the surface adjustments seem to work. A new layout most likely wouldn't work out as it will give you a different look, but still have the over/under characteristics.
