looking to fill in some holes in my aresenal
« on: October 26, 2012, 09:29:03 PM »
Ok about me 18 mph 450 rpm true cranker slip the middle finger a bit farther from thumb so inverted track. right now I have the following balls

nano pearl
marvel pearl
hyroad
agent
anarchy
slingshot spare ball dosnt hook a bit

here is what I am thinking was thinking a solid like the original nano or the lucid or vivid
looking for a ball that handles the oil a bit better and still recovers with some backend. The other spot i am looking for is a skid snap ball thinking fringe and a light oil ball thinking the breeze. Opinions are appreciated

Well I can tell you that you have a HUGE gap between that Slingshot and that list of hookers.  Since you already have a Marvel Pearl and a Nano Pearl, I am not sure why you would want another high end pearl.  IMO....you could use a lower end benchmark type of ball and a ball to go above the Slingshot, like an Ebonite Cyclone.  My thought on a lower to mid price point ball would be something like an Arson or take a Freeze Solid and knock the polish off of it.

I agree with TWOHAND834 on going with a mid-lower price point ball.  The Marvel Pearl and Nano Pearl are really not that much different from each other except a few boards.  Same with the Anarchy and the Nano Pearl/Marvel Pearl.

I would suggest that if you like the Hy-Road, you could always get a Frantic.  Same cover as the Hy-Road and same core as the 2Fast.  It gives a really good benchmark to work with and can easily fill the gap.  If you want something that rolls a little sooner in the mids than the Frantic, you could look at the Rising Star.  In either case, one of those would easily fill the gap between the Hyroad and the Slingshot on the low end.  Both are really versatile too.

On the high end, I'm thinking it would make more sense to try a surface change on the Nano Pearl or Anarchy to have more of a defined stepdown to the Marvel Pearl.  I'd probably go 4000 on 1 of those 2 balls and then keep the other 1500 polished.  Trying this may save you from having to spend north of $200 on another hook monster.

thats the problem i have taken the polish off the anarchy and hated it I am looking for a ball that will act like the original nano but a touch stronger my anarchy is a great med oil ball it has alot of games. My hyroad has 3 games on it an am not impressed with it so finding it to be really over under. I was thinking the breeze or maybe a heat to fill the lower gap. My nano pearl and marvel pearl are completely diff looking my marvel is longer and like 5 boards stronger the nano is rollier and weaker. My agent is actually about 6 less than my nano and alot like the hyroad when it reacts correctly seems like any down lane oil the hyroad just sucks the agent actually gets threw it. so I am concidering a lucid or vivid and a breeze and a heat i am thinking. Money is money ill make more but love bowling enough to justify it.

As you mentioned you have an entire arsenal of pearls and polished hybrids.  If your specs are correct (18 mph 450 rpm) everything you own is just adding to angle and giving you nothing smooth off the spot.  While angle looks cool you need something that will arc instead of snap off the spot in order to look for carry when your pearls don't work.  In the Storm / Roto family I'd look at a Manic.  It is a medium oil solid ball that should give you a look that you can't get from your existing arsenal.  The high end solids are only going to be usable for you on soup.

Heavy Oil Solids to consider:

Storm Vivid is a very smooth heavy oil ball.  I think this is a killer heavy oil ball for true crankers.

Roto Defiant is a more angular solid than the Vivid.  I like this ball for bowlers with a bit less hand.

Brunswick Nexus (the purple one) is in between the Vivid and Defiant.

Entry Level Solids:

Currently my favorite low end solid is the Roto Shout.  It is a polished solid but is real controllable and it hits like much more ball.  It is a step up from a Slingshot.

The Freight Train and The Look from 900 Global may fit what you are looking for. They are great reacting balls which won't disappoint you.

Ah I see. I can see you like Storm balls which are great too. My friend loves his Lucid, though he disliked the Vivid. So the Lucid, or the IQ would be good oil choices.

I couldn't disagree more with the Lucid.  Seen it thrown around my area and it looks to be basically the Storm version of the Critical Theory.  Why when you have an Anarchy, Nano Pearl, and a Marvel Pearl would you focus on another low RG pearl?

If you want to stay with Storm / Roto and you want another high end, low RG ball you really should look at Vivid, Nano, Defiant, IQ, and maybe the Modern Marvel.

Of these, the roll shape is the differentiator.  The IQ will allow you to square up the most and the Defiant is probably the most angular.  The Vivid and Nano are in between those.  The Modern Marvel is a great medium-heavy arch ball but it will glide drier heads better than the heavy oil balls.

Since none of us have you seen you throw the ball we have to go with your description.  If someone came into my shop with the description you have given and they were looking for a heavy oil ball I'd recommend a Vivid.  It will be very stable in heavy oil and give you a smooth transition at the breakpoint.
