Good drilling for a Hybrid?

Im gonna buy the Hybrid, and im thinking about Layout 1 in storms dril sheet. But what's the diference between MB on neg side VS MB right of thumb?
Im looking for the typical skid-flip reaction. And its going to be my ball for drier lanes.

Well that ball will not generate a skid flip reaction, it is a very even Arcing ball for medium light conditions. Now you can polish it up and go pin 5+ inches from pap to get it to react late but its not the road I'd go. And no matter what that drill sheet says the ball is nothing more than a lighter condition ball, ignore where it says condition, hopefully someone with better drilling knowledge will chime in here..

Layout #3 will give you the best skip/flip reaction from the Storm sheet, but in my estmation it will not be a great layout for drier lanes.

I agree with mike, pin 5+ inches from PAP is the way to go for drier lanes.  If you are looking for drier lanes but with some late flip I'd go with  5 x 5 or 5 x 4 with pin somewhere over the fingers and mb (I know it's not marked - but it is exactly 6 3/4" from the pin through the cg) in a strong position.

I bought a Hybrid a few weeks ago and was looking for a similar type reaction. I’m a right handed stroker throwing about 15mph with medium revs, and I usually have to practice on some junky dry lanes. I told my pro shop guru that I wanted my Hybrid drilled to be long and snappy, and she ordered me one with a setup that would let her place the pin 5+ from my pap. She drilled it stacked / non-leveraged (I think that’s what it’s called), and it works really nice. I can usually line up with my right foot on the center dot, and as long as I throw the HB over the second arrow, it’s golden. It goes down the lane smooth and makes a nice turn towards the end.


Here’s what my layout looks like:

 x (Pin centered about 1/4 – 1/2 inch above the fingers)

FF

 x (CG centered in the middle of my span which I don’t know)

 F

Layout 3 wouldn't suit my game, and i think the ball may roll out or have little energy stored for the backend. If i drill it 4½ x 4 or 5? What reaction would i get? A little more midlane roll but still a hard arc/flip?

Skid/Flip and dry lanes can be a tricky thing... beware!

With a high track I'd also place the pin at least 5" from your PAP, above the bridge should be a good area. CG stacked for flip. Keep the ball OOB at 1.500 grit polished. Then pray... The HR Hybrid is a smooth ball, and I would not expect it to be truly flippy. It is a very good medium-dry ball, but IMHO the coverstock might even be too strong for true dry conditions. A Tropical Storm with its higher RG might be a better option?

Another thing to try without much flip is to put the pin under your middle finger (almost 6" from PAP), CG at about 45° from PAP (low pin distance recommended). This is a very tame layout with a good mid lane read and controllable back end. Works well with higher revs on highre RG cores and scorched lanes. Not the big hook, but will keep you in play when needed.

Im building a 3 ball + plastic arsenal, so i dont want a ball that just works on dry lanes etc. And i'm not sure if i have a high track..I have it on my XXX, but then the span is to short on it, so i am unsure.
6" would make it condition specific, right?

Yes, well, better said it will decrease overall hook and flare potential to a minimum. That's best suited for dry lanes, but still can work on oilier shots when you play slower or just down and in. But a weak drilling on the HR Hybrid could be the smarter solution against a complete dry lane ball with a very high RG and a very weak coverstock. That would be IMHO be a more limited solution.

Maybe try a pin-under-bridge solution, which is about 5 1/2" from PAP and creates early roll and good control on a wide range of conditions. If you can, get a pin-in ball which will make ball reaction smoother. This is also a very popular layout among semi-pros for tournaments when control is essential - I guess half of the balls I have seen thrown on TV in amateur tournaments are set up this way. The ball will go smoothly and curve into the pocket, but not jump.
