Halo/Idol cover maintenance
« on: January 30, 2019, 02:17:48 PM »
Feedback please. I have an Idol, purchased from Ebay, and a NIB Halo that I punched about 3 weeks ago. The Idol seemed to lose a bit too much reaction a bit too fast, at least when compared with everything else. I know that's subjective, but it didn't bother me  too much because it was used and I haven't done an extraction (other than CND). I do regular maintenance at the end of set with Power Wash also.

The Halo seems to have the same characteristic after 8-10 games total. I know the covers are the same, that's not the point. Now I can see that it's the cover and not the used nature of the Idol. Any known issues with high maintenance, more than normal scuffing, anything at all on these balls?

Just curious. I love both balls, but they seem to need more than my other equipment.

TIA

I have about 80 games on my Idol which I hit with a 2000 pad for 5 seconds every 6 games.  The reaction is still as good as when it was new.  Checked it recently for oil  (have a Nu Ball oven) and she is dry as a bone.
I have learned by experience that you can have two or more of the same balls, yet the covers react differently in regard to oil absorption.
Case in point......I have two Motiv Venom Shocks with a couple of hundred games on both.  Have yet to get them to bleed any oil.  Yet, my wife's Shock bleeds oil like a cut artery after 15 games. Why?......darn if I know! I just chalk it up to another of those mysteries of life.

My mom has an Idol. I've noticed it lane shines pretty quickly, more so than some other balls that I put at the same surface. Still reacts just as well as it ever did when the surface is fresh. Just a little needier than some other stuff. A friend of mine has a Halo and he sees the same thing.

Yes, that fits with what I'm seeing as well with both balls. I agree it still reacts as well when sanded, but I think "a little needier" as you mentioned is a perfect way to describe what I'm seeing.

Well, the thing is that the more a ball hooks initially, the more TLC it's going to need, that's just a fact across the board for everything.  That's a super strong cover that comes out of the box at 2000, it's just not going to last long, so yeah, just more of a diva than weaker stuff lol.

I see your point, but you missed mine. I know the TLC of high end balls man, good grief. As I mentioned, "relatively speaking", it seems to need more. As a low rev lefty most of my stuff is pretty much the same, so I feel comfortable using that as a data point.

Luke, I re-read your post. I respect you a ton, brother, but I still maintain that all my stuff is high end and this cover needs more than the typical maintenance on all my other Storm gear.  It's an opinion, I'm entitled to it, and that's ok.... That's why I'm asking others if they see the same thing, right?  :)

My buddies halo went super quick too.

My comment was, "why did you polish it?"

He said, "I didnt."

Must be lane shine.

Most new solids do laneshine rather quickly..it's the norm anymore..
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

Yes, this one is definitely quicker than my Sure Lock and Phaze II. Idol's quick too, but I give it room for doubt because it's used. Had great comments on the Halo tonight and love the ball, just not able to use it as long as I would like.

I was going to say something yesterday, but thought it was well covered.

I thought the covers on the Halo and Idol were the same, with the exception that the Idol has particles in it, and the Halo doesn't.

Nope. It's the same cover completely. Both are the same NRG/Nano offshoot. That might be where you got the particles thing from.

this makes me sad.  I need a high end ball for certain conditions in a sport league i bowl in, one that is free and unsanctioned.  But i have a hard time selling myself on a ball that id use so rarely but at the high point pricing.  I've settled on the Badger Claw because it's price point is closer to the mid price range but it's an assym solid.  i need something noticably bigger than the dare devil trick

To be fair, let me make sure I re-emphasize that the Halo and Idol have been good additions to my bag. IMHO, these shine quicker than other high end oilers, ok, but it frankly affects me more as a low rev lefty. I see those changes quicker than most based on the combo of low revs and left hand being by myself, and can tell the difference if I get inside. Now, I don't think right handers, nor "normal" rev bowlers will see the difference as much as I, maybe not in a 3 game set, but I don't comment on those things normally. nothing drives me nuttier than a high rev bowler commenting on my game. WHAT THE HECK DO THEY KNOW about my world on the left flood? Nothing. However, in this case I feel it's possible that those of normal hand will misinterpret. I'm not saying it's dead after 1 game. Do I need to get straighter sooner than my beloved Phaze II or Sure Lock RELATIVELY SPEAKING? Yes, but it's a good ball. Reminder from my earlier post, this week my partner was complimenting how hard it sounded like I was hitting the pins, something I don't hear often. You might have to scuff it sooner than I would like, but I'm not at all sorry I have it. Just quicker maintenance plan than the other high end oilers. Again, this is a relative comment, which seems to freak out a few people.
I truly appreciate the confirmation that others have seen this also. That's what I was looking for, what I appreciate hearing, with thanks for the information shared. That's what we're here for.

I've heard that as well in the past. I'm pretty sure I got it right.
That the Idol has particles but is not NRG/Nano, and the Halo doesn't have the particles, not NRG/Nano yet the technology is similar only in concept. I'll take the bashing if I'm wrong and see if I can fact check it.

COVER…
In testing and development we stumbled upon our strongest blend of Nano technology for the Roto Grip Brand to date, MicroTrax-S18. With tweaks in formulas and mix ratios we have created a coverstock that provides even more traction and is overall more aggressive than the Micro DNA Coverstock.

The MicroTrax-S18 formulation was first introduced on the IDOLâ„¢. This coverstock continues to be tested by our R&D team to ensure we haven't missed anything. To date, this blend still stands as the strongest solid coverstock formulation Roto Grip has ever introduced.

Excellent FAQ checking!
I'm taking the heat and bashing for being wrong cool zero!
Damn, I didn't they were the same, one of the reasons I didn't buy the Halo but was considering the Idol, in which I'm no longer considering as of today.

Job well done!

Not bashing, just want to make sure the right info is out there.
