Storm's Reaction Charts
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:55:19 PM »
Hello all,

Does anyone actually use the Storm reaction charts for buying equipment?  I used to take them seriously, but these days I just can't.

For example, the T-Road Solid is rated as weaker in oil than the Agent and much weaker than the Special Agent.  Are they kidding?  The difference between the Special and the T-Road Solid is where the roll starts - but basically they cover the same amount of oil.  But the Agent?  Come on!

As of now the best rating's I've seen is Joe Cesar's ball rating's in Bowler's Journal.  Since he uses different testers on different conditions it is clearly the best ball rating out there.  If anyone is looking to buy a new Storm ball (or any other ball for that matter) - clearly read others reviews - but I'd take a look at Joe's ratings as well.

I have never used the rating charts for any company.  I do subscribe to Bowling This Month.  They have three different testers, Stroker/Tweener/Cranker, and they test on multiple shots, Oily/Medium/Dry/Sport.  They even give you each person's layout.  I have seen nothing else that gets close to this magazine.

BTM's ratings out of 10 on said patterns describe (in my opinon) the length and strength of the coverstock, while telling little about the ball motion or response off of friction.  BTM also rates balls based on box finish.  Even if they found a great reaction by hitting 600 wet sand on a pearl, they still would give it a 4 in oil.  I also found their ratings on sport to be unjust.  Often they would give the ball a 5 and then blame the drilling for their poor ball reaction.
Just my personal opinion.  I still do read the reviews, and find them interesting, but they still do not quite tell you everything you need to know about the ball.  However, I am quite happy with the graphs which they now include showing the ball paths.
