Bad Shift???
« on: September 16, 2008, 04:56:16 AM »
I recently purchased the Shift and have had nothing but problems. Was told it is an excellent ball. Showed the drill pattern to a few proshops and they say nothing wrong with the pattern but the ball just dies. I leave more 7-10's than anything else I've thrown. Is the ball just a bad ball and should I get another one or should I get a different ball altogether and if that's the case what would be a good replacement.

What do you use that doesn't leave 7-10's?

But then it is a particle pearl. If you're not using it on enough oil, it will hit the pocket DOA. That could be the reason for the 7-10s.

Thanks knobs and charlest. I will check things out. Also I was told that the Venom would be a better choice. Any comments?  Thanks

Better choice than what?
The Venom is an AMF particle pearl that is supposed to be very good on medium oil. I wonder if it will be any weaker than the Shift it does have a slightly weaker core.

BUT why did someone tell you it would be better than the Shift and in what way and for what???

CharlesT I think he meant the BW Venom by Ebohammer.

I had to replace a Shift that had cracked. The replacement reacted nothing like the previous one and was quite weak on the backend. I played with surfaces, plugged and redrilled, etc. I finally just chucked it into our dumpster at the center. I bought one online a few weeks later and it was just like the first one with the strong backend and loud crack of the pins.

It might just be a bad batch that occurred and you had the bad luck of getting one.

well let me start off by saying particle pearls as a whole are not a big flippy ball they are nice smooth roll with decent backend depending on layout now he amf venom i know nothing about only its pp now the hammer black widow venom is long and strong on the back end as a replacement what you looking for as reaction what are your avg lane conditions. how many games you have on the shift you maybe playing wrong part of the lane with it in the dry to much could be burning up in oil to much might be skidding to much and not getting to the dry quick enough have you played with the cover has it soaked up oil hope some of this helps

Thanks Guys. It's the Black Widow by Hammer that I was looking at. I will have my Shift looked at tonight. Maybe try a few things but it seems hard to think that it only works on certain conditions which in my area seems pretty rare. Sometimes ball works really great but then all of the sudden it starts going dead. I do know I need something for to offset the Special Agent which has been a great ball for me.

Your SHIFT likely is reacting that way because with its light particle load it is "burning up" and hitting weak. This indicates bad match of ball to lane pattern, not necessarily a bad ball or drilling.  ANY ball with any particle is going to need oil to skid on on its way to the breakpoint or it will burn up early and hit weak.

Like all particles, I treat the SHIFT as a very conditional ball - absolutely awesome when it works, useless when there's no match up.

If you are looking for a good complement to the SPECIAL AGENT for lighter/broken down conditions I would suggest the RAPID FIRE PEARL.
