The new Dark Thunder, if you can find it, would probably make you pretty happy.

The website www.bowlersdream.com is advertising it.

No way is the Dark Thunder going to be close to a Lightning...the coverstock is a bunch stronger and the ball flares more.  The original Lightning would be considered a mild ball by today's standards and it was a very control orientated ball too.  I would look into trying to find a Crisis Solid from Dynothane that would be closer...though a little hard to find now.  I know that bamaster on here had a NIB 15lb for sale.

I've got both the Thunder and the Dark Thunder. The original Thunder was/is a flare monster, no doubt.

The Dark Thunder flares considerably less, at least for me. It's a strong coverstock, to be sure, but it's predictable, and it finishes very well. The original Lightning was for up-the-track players, but I think the Dark Thunder could be drilled to play that line.

My Thunder flares 5-6"; my Dark Thunder about 2.5".

Wow...I drilled my Dark Thunder fairly similar to my old Thunder and this ball flares a whole lot for me.

Just going by what I've seen...but I will agree that it's a very consistent / hard arcing ball.

How did this become a Dark Thunder thread?

The Super Trooper is probably as close as you'll get to an original Lightning these days. The Coverstock on the Crisis is too strong and the RG is too high. Besides the original Lightning has a Curelyon solid coverstock and was sanded to 320 grit! Few used it at that grit; I sanded mine to 1000 grit.

I think it became a Dark Thunder thread because, given that this discussion is on the Storm page, it's reasonable to assume he was asking about other Storm bowling balls, which the Super Trooper is not.

But while I'm on the Super Trooper, every one of those I've ever seen has been a polished solid -- which the Lightning was not. Most Lightnings I had experience with varied between very low-grit sanded up to about 600-800 matte.

I guess we need the post author to give a little more info about his bowling style before it goes any further. From what I know about the Lightning and the Super Trooper, there are certain styles that may not translate so well over both balls.

As I stated, the Lightning came 320 grit.
Yes, it takes maybe 37 - 38 seconds to make a polished ball into 600 -1000 grit dull, to make it usable and comparable to a Lightning. I did say, "close .. these days". You are never going to find precise duplications, unless you get Brunswick to make their balls over again. They seem to be the only manufacturers with the cabilities AND RESOURCES to precisely and exactly  duplicate their previously issued balls. Until then, you have to be satisifed to close approximations.

Charlest- The ball came 600 grit sanded not 320. I double checked Storm's website.

The name say's it all

Don't care what their website NOW says NOW. Mine and many others came 320 grit out of the box. I'll stand by that fact til my dying day. They might have changed it sometime along the production schedule.

I do remember it being 320 also OOB finish.  The ball, I have used lately that resembles it's arcing motion and hookability is the Visionary Green/Blue Centaur.  I am not well versed in Storm equipment and what macthes up to the Lightning.  Last Storm ball I bought and used was an Erase-It.

I just ordered a green/blue Centaur myself on Friday night from Buddies. We'll see what happens. (With today's oils, who knows exactly how the Lightning would react, if anyone had a new one that is.)

I expect the Centaur to be one of the 2 excellent even reacting solid resin balls intended for light oil in today's market. I suspect the other is the new Burgundy Pure Hammer. There are many other solid resin even reacting balls but they're intended for heavier oils.
