Hot Rod Hybrid or Tropical Storm?
« on: June 30, 2006, 01:25:58 AM »
I'm looking to get a Storm ball for dry/broken down oil conditions. I've got a Passion and a Columbia Power Drive that work fine with the right amount of oil, but they're a real pain to control on the dry lanes where I practice. I've got a friend who uses a Tropical Storm when it's too dry for his Dark Thunder, and it finds the way to its target better than Iraqi insurgents watching Geraldo. But even though I've seen the Tropical in action, the Hybrid looks like it has the potential to be the perfect murder ball. It's got the Reactor coverstock and the FE2 core, so it's like the Tropical and the Dark Thunder got it on and had an apple scented baby.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is if the Hot Rod Hybrid is going to be too much for a down and in stroker with light to medium revs throwing at 15 mph on dry lanes, or should I get a Tropical Storm?

Hey!  I have a Dark Thunder and Tropical Storm.  What a hot coincidence.

I can say that the Tropical Storm is very nice, but I see a lot of people talking up the Hybrid on here so maybe that is a better one.  If anything, it will get better gas mileage and reduce your dependency on oil.

For me the HRH is too much ball on true drier conditions. Works great on the lighter side of medium but true dry, it's just too strong.

The dry lane ball is an important choice.  Let's get some more opinions!

The Tropical Storm is definitely a great ball.  I think we are all in agreement there.  I got my highest scoring game/first ever clean game with it.  The question is, which is better for dry lanes?  Tropical or Hybrid?  Has anyone actually used both and can compare?

johndoe, what type of style do you throw? Hey, that rhymed!

Whatever ball I end up getting is going to be drilled pretty standard/weak (whatever you call it) with the pin diagonal right up from my ring finger about an inch or so like my Power Drive. I don't have my exact measurments for that ball because my proshop guru is out at Bowl Expo, but I know we didn't do anything fancy to it. I think she called it "label drilling" or something like that.

So if I don't do anything crazy with the drilling, is there going to be a huge difference between the Hybrid's FE2 and the Tropical's Modified 3 Piece? As long as the Hybrid stays polished with Reacta Shine, shouldn't it go pretty long before it kicks in?

I am really surprised more people aren't chiming in.  I thought I remember a thread not long ago where everyone was swearing by the Hybrid as the best dry lane ball.

I would never consider the Hybrid to be the best dry lane ball ever...

...but with the correct drilling / surface prep it sure can hold it's own.

Hybrid = best dry lane ball ever

Seriously though it really depends on what you want your 'dry lane' ball to do.  If you are looking for extra length through burnt heads the Tropical is the ball for you.  If you are looking for a smooth overall reaction in medium dry then the Hybrid is for you.

I like the Hybrid because I can count on it to be controllable as the lanes go dry.  My wife and daughter both own Tropicals for drier conditions and they swear by them.  You can't go wrong with either.

I don't know what kind of hybrids you guys have, but mine is just to much for medium oil, so dry is out of the question. I'm thinking of polishing mine up to 3500 grit, I'm hopping it will work better. Beside, the Hybrid is supposed to be a good much both for oil and both for dry, so it's not a perfect ball for dry lanes.
If my new polish wouldn't work, I'm seriously thinking of buying a tropical.

For what it's worth....I have several storms undrilled including the Hybrid and the Tropical Storm. I bought the Hybrid for the medium/light area and the Tropical for dry lane conditions.

Well with my HRHB (hot rod hybrid) I for quite a while left it at 4000 grit polished, and with that finish it was perfect for torched, ultra dry, and your other balls hook too much/burn up, so yeah that is what i did, i almost bought two, one for ultra dry and one for lighter mediums, very versitle cover and ball and of course you can't go wrong with the THUNDER Balls CORE!!

Thanks for all your help everyone. I ended up getting a Hybrid yesterday, and I really love it. The blue-green color combination looks awesome; it smells like apple pie; and it makes pins cry. I put some games on it last night at “Galactic Country Bowling” which has to be the worst bowling experience ever. Picture black lights, loud country music, and giant video screens down the lane playing “Honky Tonk Badonk Adonk” coupled with lanes that leaguers have either dried up or carried down, and you’ve got my Bowling Hell. The only bright side is that Hell only costs $10 for a 2.5 hour visit so I can get a lot of cheap practice in.

After having bowled with the Passion and Power Drive for weeks in these conditions, using the Hybrid was glorious because I could comfortably play down and in. It didn’t go crazy and try to take off, and I really didn’t have to make too many adjustments. As long as I hit my marks, the HB did its job consistently. I didn’t write down any of my scores, but I started out with a couple 140 stinkers and finished with a 237 to tie my personal best.

I’m not sure what my drilling is called, but my pro shop guru, Bev, at Bowler’s Outlet in Clearwater, Florida hooked me up with a setup that would let the HB go long before coming in for the kill. It works as deliciously as the Hybrid smells.

I love this ball so much that I brought it in to work so I could smell it all day.

Reactor Hybrid + FE2 / Apple Pie = Glory,
