Passion Problems
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:18:25 PM »
first off before i get into anything heres my stats

pap 4-3/8 over 5/8 up
15 degrees axis tilt
ball speed 15-16 mph
rpm (est) 300-350 rpm

passion drilling
3-3/4 x 4 1/2 mb
weight hole on my val pitched away about 1-1/4"

problem:

got it and threw it (oob surface) worked ok but i was never a big fan of that much surface...obviously if i wasnt on enough oil it rolled out, but when i did get on a shot with some more oil, this ball still struggled to turn the corner

so then i took the surface to 800 with a scotch brite pad...this was better, a little more usable, but still not what i was looking for it still just kind of quit on the backend ESPECIALLY with even the slightest bit of carrydown.  when i got on a shorter shot with fresh snappy backends the ball just made a nice hard arc and reacted nicely...but hardly the heavy oil ball i was looking for

i then tried the surfaces of 1000 and 2000....and it got even worse so im back to 800

the last straw was watching this ball go dead straight on the shark pattern from ANY angle...ive never seen anything like it

and usually when i do hit the pocket with this thing carry is a toss up

so what should i do...a few people around here have this ball and thiers turns circles around mine....i know there were problems with cracking but were there any problems with cover durability?

i emailed storm on sunday but have yet to hear back yet

anyone on here have any ideas?

thanks!

My guess is with the combo of your rev-rate combined with a below average ball speed ( somewhat ), paired with an extremely strong core/cover ball is making the passion burn up and stop at the arrows. The fact that you used a 3 3/8" pin tells me that the ball is revving up and stopping on you. My advice would be to plug it and redrill it with no less than a 4 1/2" pin ( preferrably 5" ). After that you should be able to tweak the surface until you like it. I would reccomend polishing it lightly with Reacta-Shine, then lightly scuffing it back down with a gray scotch brite pad

Unfortunately without seeing it, its hard to help

Honestly I had the same issue. Tried OBB, polished it, sanded it I should say my PS did. Nothing. I ended up plugging the ball and it's going to a friend. Oh well some work some don't. This was a first release ball (got it at a VIP shop before the actual release)

Bar5003: I and about 10 other bowlers have had the exact problem you are having. It may be inconsistencies with the covers or something, but nonetheless I will never buy  anything in the paradigm family again. I as well took the ball down to 800, and it did hook more, but hit like a pillow. None of these balls were bought online either, and of the 10 other bowlers, 2 of those passions cracked, so i think there is something more to it then just the bowler.

agreed to the post above- alot of my friends have thrown this storm ball saying that it was one of the strongest balls out - in a few days- they had changed their minds.

I remeber from the Storm seminars that they told us at least 4 1'2 pin to axis distance as the cores are so strong the ball will burn up. I have that problem with most asym's due to my loer ball speed. Too many times i see people wanting to throw too much ball for the conditions and then complain when it doesnt work.

Bar5003, slap your ball driller to start...

That pin to PAP distance would require a lot of juice in the heads. Plus, why would your driller make the distance from RAD to PAP longer then pin to PAP? Take a look at the drill sheet that comes in the box, that is a layout that makes the ball calm down as it goes down the lane, aka hook-stop reaction.
