Hot Rod.....need layout advice!!
« on: June 08, 2008, 07:11:26 AM »
Hey everyone, I recently acquired a nice original hot rod bowling ball off ebay and just had it plugged, it has around a 3 inch pin and like 2 ounces of top weight? I am wanting the hot rod to fit between my too hot that is drilled "label", and my erazer blaze that is drilled 4.5 x 4.5 pin 45 degrees up from ring finger. My pap is 5 1/2 over and 1/2 inch up or so. My blaze is really strong in the mid lane and on the backend, where my too hot is smoother, but still with some back end. I am wanting my hot rod to role in the mid lane but be smooth on the backend. I was thinking pin 3 1/4 inches above the mid line above ring, 4 inches from my pap and the cg in palm, basically a 4 x 5 1/2?
Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I am going to have it drilled on monday, thanks.

Take a look at the specs for each ball here on ball reviews. I want you to see how much/little difference there is between the Too Hot and the Hot Rod. I had thought the Hot Rod used Accu-Tread but it doesn't (it could be wrong?) both the Too Hot and the Hot Rod both use Curelyon pearl.
Here's the Storm's own specs:
http://www.stormbowling.com/products/balls/archive-ball.asp?ballid=76

http://www.stormbowling.com/products/balls/archive-ball.asp?ballid=150

I think you'd have  to use a low pin position AND sand (or at least use a lot less polished surface on) the Hot Rod to make a significant difference in ball reaction from your Too Hot. 3 1/4" pin above the midline, 4" pin to PAP is going to make it VERY flippy and very similar to the Too Hot.

Unless you have some other version of the Hot Rod, like the Pro Stock or the Hybrid and didn't bother to tell use that bit of information ....

It is the original hot rod with the curelyon coverstock. I track kind of high right next to middle and thumb hole and a low pin position might give me a problem, but what about pin above bridge 5 inches from my pap with a hole in the finger area, would that work? I would most likely do 4k abralon or 2k abralon no polish with this.

Why so far, when that would, apparently, make it close to the Too Hot?
Sanding to 2000 would help differentiate it AND surface does make the biggest difference. Do you have a very high rev rate that would make that long pin-PAP distance preferable?

I have medium revs at most and I know an extra hole in the finger area does tame down the backend, but if it is better for me to go pin down, then would putting the pin directly under fingers with the cg next to thumb or kick it out more so I can add a hole in the thumb area work? I have a x-factor reloaded with the pin right under ring and an extra hole just inside my pap and when I add some surface it really tames the backend down, so right now it looks for me to do pin down, but whether to use a hole or not is the question. Let me know what you think and would suggest based off of what I just said, thanks.

Well, another thing is that I bowl a lot on a house shot when I am not bowling league and my too hot can get a little flippy so I was wanting the hot rod to fit between my blaze which is very strong on a house shot and my too hot, to role sooner, but be smoother on the backend.

Look, I'm not an expert at drilling, but do have some experience. Since these ball have what seems to be the same cover and relatively similar cores, I'm just trying to nudge you in the direction of insuring they'll be different enough to use them as goto ball.

As long you're not the type of tracker where a pin below the ring finger area causes you to hit the track over the finger hole, YES, IF IT WERE ME, I would definitely put the pin under the ring finger and aposition so the CG so that if it turns out that you need more flare, then you can put a weight hole 6 3/4" out.

Then, I'd suggest trying a 4000 grit finish first on the Hot Rod.If that doesn't make it early enough, try the 2000 grit finish,

I think you've just shown yourself that it can work for you. Again, my only concern was to make the Hot Rod react differently ENOUGH from the Too Hot.

I understand. In fact, if you drill it the way you suggest (and I think it should work), try the Hot Rod with the factory polished finish then try the 4000 grit matte, then try the 2000 grit matte finish, if necessary. Take it in stages so you don't pass up what you need.

I agree, thank you charlest for your suggestions, I am going in tomorro to get it drilled so this helps a lot. I plan on bowling tomorro night, so I will let you know how it goes with the polish first, then go from there Why it probably is good that I put the pin below bridge is because my brother has a too hot with a 2 1/2 inch pin drilled 2 1/2 from pap in line with the ring finger(he has the same pap as me), and the cg closer to 3 inches from pap with a 3/4 inch hole 2 inches deep 1 inch below mid line and his too hot hooks a bunch. I also plan on using my hot rod on the cheetah pattern when I bowl this up coming fall league so, it should work pretty good.
