Hot Rod PS ?

I was looking for a new medium heavy oil ball, and was wondering if the HRPS might just fit that bill?

Right now a Visionary Charcoal Exc drilled stacked at 1000 grit is doing well, but the ball is ready for it's 2nd resurface and I don't like to do 2nd resurfaces.

I really liked the way the Charcoal got through the heads so cleanly but still turned up in a fair amount of oil, and the continuation, don't get me started about that.

I am ready for a new ball, I used Storm when they first came out and the last storm ball I bought though were a ThunderStorm and a MeteorStorm (SP?), so it's been a little bit.

I really like the specs on the ball, and the coverstock sounds like it could handle a bit of oil?

I have a strong amount of revs and normally roll the ball around 17.5 to 18 MPH at the pindeck.  



So with the right drill and cover prep is this a ball that can handle medium heavy, get through the heads pretty clean and retain a decent backend and continuation?

I believe it comes polished, so you might have to sand the coverstock, but anything with solid Monsoon would work good on medium-heavy.  Might consider the Super Charge too, although it might be juuuust a tad stronger than what you're looking for.  I've got a friend that will probably be drilling a HRPS tonight, and I should be able to give you a good opinion at least.

Why dont you just get another charcoal? Or are you just looking for something new to try? I agree with hamster, but if you liked the charcoal so much, you can still get them.

Well BK, I have been throwing the Exc for a little while now and just want to throw something else, and it seems that when I buy a ball to replace one of the same, it just never works the same, so might as well get the latest and greatest!!


Hamster that would be great if you could give me the 411 when you get it, the proshop here has the HRPS pearl but not the regular, and no one else is throwing it, they all go for the high end stuff!   That HRPS pearl sure is a purdy ball though!

Lol, I'm not going to try to argue with a staff member, but the Flash Point and Depth are both pearls (the Depth at least being a particle pearl), and I know that both of them can be squirty.  I had a stacked Super Charge, and it was the truest rolling ball I've ever had.  I'm also getting an Atomic Charge, which should probably be a hybrid Super/HRPS, being that it has the Super cover on one of the Flash cores, and although the hook potential might be closer to the Super, the reaction shape should be right in the middle.

Hot Rod Pro Stock with some surface added should be great on medium/heavy.  I use it with box shine, great for me, 300/780 last week on THS.  Clean 705 this week.  Pretty strong ball, with core similar to the Thunder Storm.  I want to drill another and scuff it a little, sounds good!!

Atomic Charge looks okay, Super shell with Recharge core.  A little lopey for heavy oil, but could work.  Smells good too!

I think that either a Depth Charge or Eraser Particle Pearl would be a better choice than the HRPS.
Both of them will handle more oil.
Here are the numbers from Bowling This Month's reviews of them.

You can look at mag reviews all ya want.  I've thrown more than one of each of them, and can tell you.  The Depth Charge is a pretty strong ball, hits great, but can be a little too squirty on heavy/long oil.  Eraser Particle which also is a favorite is just too mellow for heavy/long oil.  Just like the Hot Rod Pro Stock, you would have to put surface on them for alot of oil.  Pro Stock just has more bite at the break point, very continuous.

My EPP is my benchmark ball, great on wet dry, hooking back ends.  Depth Charge is more ball, has that Inferno kind of roll, but too long on a long pattern.  HRPS is cheaper than the other two, and with some surface will be a better choice.  Alot of bang for the buck!!

My point was that they are stronger with the same surface (Box/1500 polished)  and would not require such a drastic surface change and in my opinion that makes them better for oil and more versatile.
Any ball will work on oil if you give it enough surface, but they become smoother with less power at the pin deck where it really matters.

Actually the Charcoal Exc replaced my ThunderStorm, after a few years off I came back to find more oil than I had ever seen before and the TS just wasn't enough, the Exc did the trick though.   If there are enough similarities then I just might love the ball.   Would it be to much of a strecth to call the HRPS an update of Thunder Storm?   Close even?
