X Factor Deuce first impressions
« on: August 26, 2003, 04:47:50 PM »
After taking Excaliber's advice on ball first impressions, I decided to post my thoughts on this "fabled" ball.

First off my initial feelings about the Deuce are not too great, I don't see where all the hype came from for such an average ball.  The drilling layout most likely is the factor of my dislikes, but that also is the advantage of why I'd keep it in my bag.

I originally wanted the Deuce drilled with the RAD in strong position, and I didn't care how the PIN or CG were laid out.  Since I didn't have any real plans on using it during competition I said, "What the hell."

When I picked up the Deuce it was laid out label with the RAD in the track.  I asked the driller why and he said I told him not to stack the PIN and CG, which is somewhat true, but I told him to put the RAD next to the thumb even if it meant a stacked drill.

I get on the lanes and I'm practicing with the Deuce to find out drilled this way there is virtually no recovery on medium oil, it has a small backend arc but the ball rolls as soon as I release it.  I don't have a solid resin ball that works this way so I will welcome it to my bag because it offers me the same control I get with my Track Enforcer, but when the lanes start to dry out.

The most disappointing aspect of the Deuce throughout the whole night was the carry.  Alot of people mention the ball doesn't leave corner pins, well they're right.  Although I left every other back row pin besides the ten pin.  I tried many different adjustments but nothing worked well enough to carry consistently.  The hit is nothing special because I've seen and thrown harder hitting equipment.

My overall first impression may not be to exciting, but I think it will fit in well, and I must get used to the Deuce and like.  I know in the future even if I still dislike the ball that it will be useful anyways.

Steven

At first I let my emotions speak for my experience with the Deuce.....even though in league last night I shot a 269 with it I didn't like the way it reacted for me.  I guess I put myself in the ignorant category of reviewers until I decided to think about what the Deuce offers me.  That's when I decided to post this thread because I knew someone would hold a conversation to rationalize how the ball truly works.

I do however own quite a few bowling balls and up to this point I'm reaching 25 that I use for open/league/tourny/testing purposes.  I have all ranges from high RG and low DIF to low RG and high DIF.  I have alot of equipment from different manufacturers that do many different things.....but the Deuce is the only resin control ball I own right now.

Since I will be bowling on many 10-10 wet/dry house patterns I believe this drill pattern was a mistake on my behalf.  To be honest I only wanted to use the Deuce in open bowling but I can't now because it rolls too smooth for me not to throw it.

Mumzie, I also noticed my Deuce become mirror like after three games....all I thought of was your thread about your dead Deuce.  I really hope overall this doesn't die like tomorrow......and I can get at least a season out of it.

APK: I wasn't making reference to any 'reviews' you've made regarding the Deuce or any other ball, so I'm sorry if I came across that way. You've always struck me as someone with good knowledge, so no offense intended.

I was partially talking from my own experience of making bad ball purchase decisions based on reading the the thoughts of others. I've been burned more than once because I did not do enough of my own homework

Given that the Deuce is a resin control ball, it's hard to evaluate it based on most other equipment. If I had not previously owned the El Nino Gold and the La Nina, the Deuce would have been a shock to me too.

Oh Steven,

I don't take offense to any comment you made, and didn't see anything that should trigger an offense, so nothing to apologize for.  You are just sharing your knowledgable experiences with someone in need of understanding.

I've definitley made some real bad ball purchases in the past as most people who come on this site have, so I try to research as much as possible before buying a ball.  He he he...just so happens I bought around 15 from this site alone.  I have learned my lesson also, checking to make sure the equipment will suit my irregular style.

Saying that if it wasn't for the El Nino Gold or La Nina would make the Deuce a shock for you is exactly how I felt when I threw it.  I was just like "Wow".......considering my main go to ball is the Crimson Executioner I'm used to a "strong" backend finish.  Even with my Enforcer being strong by nature I had it drilled for control, but I still need a lot of oil to keep it on the lane but I don't have any over under problems using it.

I'll be using the Deuce again later in the evening on a used up open shot.  I'm fairly interested to see how this ball will react on spotty near dirt conditions.

I have been going thru a bad case of "Deuceitist" myself since day one. I buy thr X Factor and it changes my game, so of course the Deuce is next. Having great luck with the X Factor drilled 1B pattern, I had the same done to my Deuce even though my driller said no. It has drove me crazy ever since I got it. I did find a few conditions (more sport)that it worked great on, but on most of the conditions I see it acts just like what most on here are saying...flat! I have talked to the Local rep twice about it, as I want to use the ball so much and really can't because of the results. His first comment was that it needed oil to work better. His second was based on me asking him how to redrill it. I toook it to my driller and he said redrilling it is hard because he is not sure were the track will be on a stacked drilling and that it might roll over my old thumb. So, I am having him redo my thumb (fit was off) and change the surface.....I am glad that I read this thread because I just dropped it off with him last night. Any thoughts on redrilling up a Deuce? Thanks BG

Well, after a few more games with the Deuce it's starting to interest me just a little more and more each time.  I can find a line with the ball and stay with it until the transition gets too ugly to stay in one place.  It is pretty forgiving of everything (and I mean everything) the bowler will do.  I've noticed that keeping the ball slightly dulled with a green scotchbrite pad helps with the reaction I wanted even with the drilling on it.  As long as I keep the Deuce clean and give it a light scrub with the pad it has a pretty strong backend reaction.  So far the only thing I'm a bit weary on is the carry but other than that it's getting better with the Deuce.
